Common in Amazon Ads and marketplace advertising as the primary profitability metric. ACoS stands for Advertising Cost of Sales. It is calculated as (ad spend / attributed revenue) × 100. If you spent $100 on ads and those ads drove $400 in sales, ACoS is 25%. ACoS is the inverse of ROAS. A 25% ACoS is the same as a 4× ROAS. Marketplace advertisers like Amazon sellers tend to talk in ACoS; paid-social and paid-search advertisers tend to talk in ROAS. They're measuring the same underlying relationship. 'Target ACoS' is the ACoS that leaves the brand profitable after cost of goods, fulfillment, and overhead. A 30% ACoS looks good until you realize cost of goods is 50% — then every sale at 30% ACoS loses money. Always calculate target ACoS from gross margin backwards. --- ### Advantage+ (Meta Advantage+ Campaigns) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/advantage-plus Meta Advantage+ is Meta's AI-automated campaign type that consolidates audiences, placements, and creatives into a single campaign optimized by Meta's machine-learning stack. Advantage+ is the umbrella brand Meta uses for its automated campaign features across Facebook and Instagram. The two flagship formats are Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns (for DTC conversions) and Advantage+ App Campaigns (for mobile install and engagement). Advantage+ lets Meta choose audience signals, placements, and creative variants automatically — removing most manual targeting levers. This tends to outperform hand-built campaigns for DTC brands with strong conversion signal, and underperform for brands with thin conversion data or highly specific audience requirements. AI marketing agents that run Advantage+ effectively layer human approval gates, handle creative variant generation, feed clean conversion data via the Conversions API, and iterate based on asset-level performance — the parts Meta does not automate. --- ### AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/aeo Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring web content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews quote it directly as the answer to a user question. AEO is to AI answer engines what SEO is to Google search results. The goal shifts from ranking in the top ten links to being the single quoted answer an AI assistant returns. Example: a buyer asks ChatGPT "what is a good ROAS for Meta ads?", and the page that opens with a two-sentence answer and a benchmark table is the one quoted, not the page that ranks first on Google. Effective AEO combines: (1) question-style headings that mirror how users phrase prompts, (2) short, declarative standalone paragraphs that LLMs can lift without rewriting, (3) heavy schema.org markup — FAQPage, HowTo, DefinedTerm, Article — that explicitly labels the content type, (4) entity-dense writing that names brands, products, and concepts rather than using pronouns, and (5) a crawlable, fast-loading site so AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) can index you in the first place. AEO and SEO share infrastructure but diverge on format. Depth and keyword density still matter for SEO; concise answer fragments and schema matter more for AEO. Both can be true for the same page — and usually are, when the writing is done with both crawlers in mind. --- ### Attribution https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/attribution Attribution assigns credit for a conversion across the marketing touchpoints that contributed to it. Common models: last-click, first-click, linear, time-decay, and data-driven. Attribution is the logic by which a marketer decides which ad, channel, or campaign gets credit for a sale. The choice of model determines which channels look profitable in reports. Last-click attribution gives 100% credit to the final touchpoint before conversion — the simplest model and the default in most ad platforms. First-click credits the initial touchpoint, useful for brand awareness work. Linear and time-decay spread credit across the funnel. Data-driven attribution (DDA) uses machine learning to assign credit based on how much each touchpoint actually influenced conversion probability. Google's DDA is the current default in Google Ads. DDA typically shows higher credit for upper-funnel channels than last-click does — which can reshape budget decisions dramatically. Multi-touch attribution tools (Triple Whale, Rockerbox, Northbeam) stitch attribution across platforms so you see the full path. Incrementality testing is the rigorous alternative: hold out audiences and measure the revenue lift the campaign actually caused, not just the revenue it claimed. --- ### CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/cac Customer Acquisition Cost is the fully-loaded spend required to acquire one paying customer, calculated as total acquisition spend divided by new customers in a period. CAC is the per-customer cost of the marketing and sales work that produced that customer. Blended CAC includes every dollar spent on acquisition — ads, salary of the acquisition team, tools, agency fees — divided by new customers. Paid CAC isolates just ad spend over new customers attributed to paid channels. Most operators track paid CAC daily or weekly and blended CAC monthly. Paid CAC is sensitive to bidding changes and can move fast; blended CAC is the real profitability signal. Healthy CAC is judged against LTV. The LTV:CAC ratio is the guardrail — most DTC brands target 3:1 or better. A 1:1 ratio is unsustainable. Ratios of 5:1+ often mean a brand is under-investing and leaving growth on the table. CAC payback is the time to recoup CAC from gross margin. A 6-month payback is strong for SaaS, 3-month for DTC. Long payback is why aggressive growth brands need patient capital. --- ### CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/cpa Cost Per Acquisition is the average ad spend per conversion event, typically counted within an ad platform. CPA is what ad platforms show; CAC is what your finance team sees. CPA is the metric ad platforms (Meta, Google, LinkedIn) report: total ad spend / reported conversions. If you spent $1,000 and Meta reported 50 purchases, CPA is $20. CPA is always a platform-defined, within-platform number. It counts conversions the platform takes credit for — which means it includes view-through conversions (Meta), click-through conversions (Google), and cross-device attribution the platform assigns to itself. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) is the finance-grade equivalent: blended acquisition spend across every channel and function, divided by new customers. CAC > CPA almost always, because CAC includes non-ad costs (salary, tooling, agency fees) and doesn't double-count conversions across platforms the way stacked CPAs do. Target CPA bidding is a Google Ads feature that optimizes against a CPA goal. It works best when you have 30+ conversions per month in the ad account — below that, the algorithm does not have enough signal to optimize stably. --- ### CTR (Click-Through Rate) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/ctr Click-Through Rate is the percentage of ad impressions that result in a click. Calculated as (clicks / impressions) × 100. A leading indicator of creative relevance and audience targeting. CTR is the cleanest early signal that a creative is working. Good CTR means the hook is landing — the audience saw enough value in the headline, image, or first second of video to click through. Low CTR almost always means one of: wrong audience, wrong offer, weak hook, or stale creative. CTR benchmarks vary by channel and format. Meta feed ads sit around 1–2% CTR. Google Search ads often 4–8%+. Display ads typically 0.3–0.8%. TikTok and Reels run 1–3%. What matters more than the benchmark is the trend — a CTR that drops 30%+ from its recent baseline is creative fatigue. CTR is a means, not an end. High CTR with bad conversion is often worse than low CTR with good conversion — you're paying for clicks that don't convert. Always pair CTR with conversion rate and CPA/ROAS to read the full picture. --- ### Cross-Channel AI Ad & SEO Copilot https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/cross-channel-ai-ad-seo-copilot A Cross-Channel AI Ad & SEO Copilot is an AI marketing agent that unifies paid advertising on multiple channels (Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit) and SEO execution into a single workflow, keeping a human operator in control while automating the repetitive 80% of the work. The category name describes a specific shape of product: AI-native from day one, covers more than one ad channel, covers SEO alongside paid, keeps the human in the loop via approval gates. Sprites is the reference implementation. The shape exists because performance marketing teams kept building the same stack manually — a Meta ads tool, a Google ads tool, a SEO research tool, a creative generator, a reporting layer, and an attribution layer, stitched together with Zapier. A Cross-Channel AI Ad & SEO Copilot consolidates that workflow into one agent so the operator describes outcomes in natural language and the agent orchestrates the execution across channels. The copilot framing (as opposed to 'autonomous agent') is deliberate. Ad spend has real consequences, so every change routes through a human approval gate. The agent compresses the execution time; the human keeps the judgment call. --- ### DCO (Dynamic Creative Optimization) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/dco Dynamic Creative Optimization generates and tests ad creative variants automatically — swapping headlines, images, CTAs, and compositions — then shifts budget toward the variants performing best for each audience. DCO is how paid-social teams scale creative testing beyond what a human designer can produce manually. A DCO system takes a master creative or brief, generates N variants programmatically, launches all variants into the ad platform, and lets the platform's algorithm (or a separate optimizer) shift budget toward the winners. Meta Advantage+ and TikTok Spark include native DCO features — upload multiple headlines, descriptions, and creatives, and Meta or TikTok assembles variants. Third-party DCO platforms (Hunch, Smartly) add deeper template control and cross-channel variant generation. AI-agent DCO is the emerging pattern: instead of configuring master templates and variant slots, you describe the campaign and the agent generates variants from the product + brand + past-performance data. Human approval gates still run, but the production side collapses from days to minutes. --- ### GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/geo Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing content so it is surfaced and cited by generative AI engines like Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and the web-search modes of ChatGPT and Claude. GEO overlaps heavily with AEO but emphasizes the generative output: making sure your content is one of the sources the AI engine pulls from when generating a multi-paragraph answer, and that the answer cites or links back to you. GEO winners tend to combine strong entity coverage (the page is clearly about named brands, products, and concepts), heavy schema.org markup (which gives the LLM clean structured input), authoritative outbound and inbound citations, and technical health (fast load, server-rendered content, schema visible to GPTBot / ClaudeBot / PerplexityBot / Google-Extended crawlers). The gap between SEO and GEO is widening because AI engines reward different things than classical Google rank — concise facts, quotable paragraphs, and structured data matter more; deep long-tail SEO content with keyword variations matters less. Both can coexist on the same page. --- ### Incrementality https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/incrementality Incrementality is the revenue a marketing effort actually caused — the lift over what would have happened without it. Measured through geo holdouts, user-level holdouts, and synthetic control experiments. Incrementality testing is the gold-standard answer to the question every performance marketer wants: 'how much did this channel actually grow the business?' Platform-reported conversions almost always overstate contribution because they count organic and brand traffic that would have converted anyway. The two common incrementality designs: geo holdouts (turn off a channel in some geographic markets for a window, compare revenue against matched control geos) and user holdouts (Meta Conversion Lift, Google Uplift studies that hold some users out of your ads and compare conversions). Incrementality usually reveals that last-click attribution overstates Meta, Google Search (on brand keywords), and retargeting. It often understates YouTube, Display, and top-of-funnel work. Results reshape budget allocation — which is why brands running mature performance marketing do at least quarterly incrementality studies. --- ### iROAS (Incremental ROAS) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/iroas Incremental ROAS is return on ad spend calculated against incremental revenue — the revenue the ads actually caused, not the revenue the platform claims credit for. iROAS = incremental revenue / ad spend. The key word is incremental. Platform-reported ROAS uses platform-attributed revenue, which typically overstates contribution because it includes conversions that would have happened without the ad. iROAS is always lower than reported ROAS. The gap is the overstatement. A Meta-reported ROAS of 5× often lands at iROAS 2–3× once holdout testing strips out the organic conversions. This is not Meta being dishonest — it is a structural limitation of click-and-view-through attribution. Measuring iROAS requires an incrementality test: geo holdout, user-level holdout (Conversion Lift), or synthetic control. Because these are slow and expensive to run, most brands only have iROAS figures for a few major campaigns per year, then use those multipliers to discount their real-time reported ROAS. --- ### llms.txt https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/llms-txt llms.txt is an emerging plain-text file (served at /llms.txt) that tells large language models which pages, products, and facts a site wants cited in AI answers. Proposed by Answer.ai in 2024. llms.txt is to AI crawlers what robots.txt is to Googlebot — a simple text file at the site root that guides the crawler. Unlike robots.txt, llms.txt does not block anything; it signals which canonical pages and facts matter for LLM responses. A typical llms.txt lists: a 1–2 paragraph description of the company in language an LLM can quote verbatim, canonical URLs for key pillar pages and product pages, category positioning (what category you belong to, and how you describe it), and optional comparison context for how you relate to competitors. The standard is not yet formally adopted by OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, but LLM crawlers appear to pull llms.txt files when they encounter them. Publishing one is low-effort and an early AEO signal. Sprites ships an llms.txt alongside robots.txt — see https://www.sprites.ai/llms.txt. --- ### LTV (Customer Lifetime Value) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/ltv Customer Lifetime Value is the total gross profit a customer generates over their active relationship with the business. Paired with CAC to judge unit economics. LTV is the revenue a single customer generates — minus cost of goods, fulfillment, and direct service costs — across their lifetime. Different industries define 'lifetime' differently: SaaS often uses 36 or 60 months; DTC ecommerce often uses 12 months as a practical horizon. LTV:CAC is the foundational unit-economics ratio. A 3:1 or better LTV:CAC means every customer generates at least three times their acquisition cost in gross profit — which makes scaling ad spend sustainable. A 1:1 or lower ratio is a signal to cut spend or raise AOV. Cohort LTV is the honest metric — measured by looking at actual cohorts over time — rather than predicted LTV, which often overstates via optimistic extrapolation. Fast-growing brands should underwrite ad spend against cohort-backed LTV, not a model. --- ### MMM (Marketing Mix Modeling) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/mmm Marketing Mix Modeling is a statistical technique that estimates how much each marketing channel contributed to sales, using aggregated time-series data. The classical alternative to user-level attribution. MMM uses regression models to disentangle the contribution of paid channels, organic channels, price, promotions, seasonality, and macro factors to total sales. It works on aggregated data — weekly spend and weekly sales per market — so it does not rely on user-level tracking that iOS 14.5+ and browser restrictions have broken. MMM is making a comeback because the privacy changes broke multi-touch attribution for most brands. It is also what Meta and Google recommend as the replacement for lost attribution signal (Meta Advanced Analytics, Google Meridian). MMM is not instant. Running one requires 2+ years of weekly data and produces channel contribution estimates on a monthly or quarterly cadence. It is strategic rather than tactical — you use it to allocate budget across channels, not to decide whether to pause a specific ad set. --- ### Performance Max https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/performance-max Performance Max is Google's AI-automated campaign type that serves ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, and Maps from a single campaign, optimizing for a single conversion goal. Performance Max (PMax) consolidates Google's placements into one campaign. You give PMax a conversion goal, creative assets (headlines, descriptions, images, videos, logos), audience signals, and a budget. Google's ML stack picks placements, audiences, bids, and asset combinations automatically. PMax outperforms hand-built campaigns when you have strong conversion signal (Google Ads conversion tracking firing reliably, 30+ conversions per month, clean Merchant Center feed for Shopping). It underperforms when conversion signal is thin or the brand needs tight control over where ads run. The standard failure modes: giving PMax too few assets, feeding bad conversion data, allowing PMax to overlap with branded Search campaigns (it cannibalizes brand traffic). AI agents running PMax effectively generate full asset sets from a brief, enforce negative keywords and brand exclusions, and monitor asset-level performance surfaced through the Google Ads API — not the UI. --- ### Retargeting https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/retargeting Retargeting shows ads to users who have already interacted with your brand — site visitors, cart abandoners, past buyers — using pixel or CAPI tracking. Usually the highest-ROAS slice of a paid media plan. Retargeting is mechanically simple: capture an identifier when a user visits your site (Meta Pixel, Google tag, CRM email hash), build an audience from that identifier list, show ads to that audience on Meta / Google / LinkedIn. The ads typically reference the specific page, product, or intent the user showed. Retargeting is where beginners often go wrong on incrementality. Reported ROAS on retargeting campaigns looks spectacular — 10× or higher — because the audience was already going to convert. Holdout tests usually show iROAS much lower, sometimes under 2×. You don't want to kill retargeting (the incremental lift is still positive), but budget allocation should reflect incremental, not reported, return. iOS 14.5+ and third-party cookie deprecation have degraded retargeting precision. Workarounds: server-side Conversions API for Meta, enhanced conversions and Customer Match for Google, and server-side CRM syncs to replenish lookalike + retargeting audiences. --- ### ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/roas Return on Ad Spend is the ratio of revenue generated by ads to the ad spend, expressed as a multiplier. A ROAS of 4× means $4 of revenue for every $1 of ad spend. ROAS = ad-attributed revenue / ad spend. It is the most commonly quoted efficiency metric in paid advertising. Break-even ROAS depends on your gross margin — at 50% margin, 2× ROAS is break-even on contribution; at 70% margin, break-even is around 1.45×. 'Target ROAS' is the ROAS that hits your profitability goal after cost of goods, fulfillment, and overhead. Setting target ROAS too high caps growth; too low burns cash. Most DTC brands target 2.5–4× blended ROAS. ROAS is reported ROAS — what the ad platform says. iROAS (incremental ROAS) is what the ads actually caused, measured via holdout or incrementality test. iROAS is lower than ROAS, often significantly. Run iROAS tests at least quarterly and discount reported ROAS accordingly when making budget decisions. --- ### Conversion Lift https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/uplift Conversion Lift is Meta's native incrementality test — a randomized holdout that measures the incremental conversions ads caused, rather than the platform-attributed conversions. Conversion Lift runs as a managed experiment inside Meta Ads Manager. You define a campaign, Meta holds out a control group of users who never see the ads, then compares conversion rates between the exposed and holdout groups. The difference is the incremental lift caused by the campaign. Conversion Lift tests typically require a Meta rep to set up and need sufficient spend ($20k+ per test) and conversion volume to reach statistical significance. They are the most rigorous answer to "did Meta actually cause this revenue?" Equivalent tests exist on other platforms: Google Ads Uplift studies, TikTok Lift, LinkedIn Brand Lift. All measure the same thing — incremental conversions rather than reported conversions — and all produce lift numbers dramatically lower than platform-reported attribution. Plan on iROAS being 50–70% of reported ROAS for Meta retargeting, 70–90% for Google Search non-brand. --- ### Vibe Marketing https://www.sprites.ai/glossary/vibe-marketing Vibe marketing is the marketing counterpart to vibe coding: you describe the outcome, tone and audience in plain language, and AI agents handle production, from creative and copy to targeting, launch and optimization. The marketer supplies taste and strategy; the agent supplies volume and speed, working inside the real ad accounts and CMS and proposing each change for approval before it is made. The term was coined in early 2025, a month after Andrej Karpathy named vibe coding, and the practice has since moved from n8n-style workflows to agents that hold a whole job. For the full definition, the comparison with traditional marketing, demonstrated workflows, the tool landscape and a seven-day starting plan, read the vibe marketing pillar.
