Canva can design an Instagram ad and schedule an organic Instagram post, but it cannot run an Instagram ad. There is no connection from Canva to Meta Ads Manager: you export the design and build the campaign in Ads Manager, or hand the creative to an ad automation agent that builds and runs it. Canva’s Instagram integration is for organic publishing through its Content Planner.
That division of labour is actually the right one. Canva is the fastest way for a non-designer to produce on-spec, on-brand creative in every placement size, and Meta’s campaign machinery is where the creative earns its keep. This guide gives you the specs to design to, the Canva features worth using, the campaign setup, and the point where a weekly optimisation loop should stop being a human’s job.
What Canva supports natively
What Canva does for Instagram ads, checked against its product on September 4, 2026:
Canva does
- Instagram ad templates and presets. Ready sizes for Feed (1080×1080 and 1080×1350), Stories and Reels (1080×1920), with thousands of ad templates.
- Brand Kit. Logos, colours and fonts applied across every variant, which keeps a five-ad test consistent.
- Magic Resize and Bulk Create. One design resized to every placement, and one layout populated from a spreadsheet of headlines for fast copy testing.
- Video and animation. Short video ads with text animation and stock footage; exports as MP4 within Meta’s limits.
- Organic Instagram scheduling. Content Planner connects an Instagram Business account to schedule organic posts (not ads).
Canva does not
- Create, boost or manage ads in Meta Ads Manager.
- Connect a pixel, set up conversions or track ad performance.
- Check creative against Meta’s text and policy rules; that happens at review.
- Generate the campaign structure, audiences or budgets.
Design to the specs below and the export drops straight into Ads Manager. Feed: 1080×1080 (1:1) or 1080×1350 (4:5), JPG or PNG. Stories and Reels: 1080×1920 (9:16), keep text out of the top and bottom 250 pixels where the interface overlays. Video: MP4 or MOV, H.264, up to 60 seconds for Reels placements, sound-off legible. Keep primary text under 125 characters and headlines under 40, because Ads Manager truncates the rest. Sprites accepts the exported files as they are and builds the campaign to these specs, so nothing below needs redoing if you hand it off.
How to launch an Instagram ad designed in Canva
From a blank Canva page to a running campaign. Steps 1 to 3 are Canva; the rest is Meta, and they are the same for every creative you make afterward.
1. Set up the Brand Kit and pick the placement sizes
Add your logo, colours and fonts to Canva’s Brand Kit so every variant is consistent. Create the design at 1080×1080 for Feed, then Magic Resize to 1080×1350 and 1080×1920, checking each size by hand: Magic Resize moves elements, it does not redesign them.
2. Design for a thumb, not a screen
One message per ad, the product or outcome visible in the first frame, headline text large enough to read at a third of the size, and a clear reason to tap. For video, the first two seconds decide the view. Before designing from scratch, look at the hooks the category has run longest in the ads library; longevity is the best public signal of what converts.
3. Make five variants and export to spec
Use Bulk Create with a sheet of five headlines to produce five versions of one layout, or duplicate the design and change one element per variant (hook, image, colour). Export as PNG for images and MP4 for video, named by placement and variant so Ads Manager uploads are not a guessing game.
4. Set up the Meta assets and the pixel
In Meta Business Suite: a business portfolio, an ad account with billing, a Facebook Page and the connected Instagram Business account the ads will run from. Create a dataset in Events Manager, install the pixel on your site (your site builder’s integration or a snippet in the head), and fire the conversion you care about, a lead, a signup or a purchase.
5. Build the campaign in Ads Manager
Choose the objective that matches the event (Leads or Sales), select the pixel event as the optimisation goal, and in the ad set choose Advantage+ placements or manually select Instagram Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore. Start broad in your target markets with a modest daily budget; targeting narrows itself with conversion data. This is the structure Sprites builds from an uploaded Canva set, so if you would rather not learn Ads Manager, upload the files from step 3 and approve the draft.
6. Upload the Canva creative per placement
In the ad, upload the 1:1 or 4:5 file for Feed and use placement customisation to swap in the 9:16 file for Stories and Reels. Add primary text under 125 characters, a headline under 40, a call to action, and the landing URL with UTM parameters. Create one ad per variant so Meta can tell you which one wins.
7. Launch, then rotate creative weekly
Give the ad set a week and enough budget for 30 to 50 conversions. Then pause the variant with the worst cost per result, scale the best, and bring one new Canva variant in. Creative fatigue on Instagram is measured in weeks, so this rotation is the whole job after launch.
Where automation takes over
Canva makes step 3 cheap, which is exactly why steps 6 and 7 become the bottleneck: producing five new variants is an hour, uploading, structuring, launching and judging them every week is a standing job.
Sprites takes the creative you make in Canva (or generates on-brand variants of its own), connects to Meta through the official partner API, builds the campaign to the structure above, and runs the weekly rotation: pausing fatigued creative, funding winners, adjusting budgets and placements, and telling you which hook is working and why. Every change is proposed with its reasoning and waits for your approval, so Canva stays your design tool and the agent becomes your media buyer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you run Instagram ads from Canva?
No. Canva designs the ad and can schedule organic Instagram posts through its Content Planner, but it has no connection to Meta Ads Manager. Export the design and build the campaign in Ads Manager, or through an ad automation agent such as Sprites.
What size should an Instagram ad be in Canva?
1080×1080 pixels (1:1) or 1080×1350 (4:5) for Feed, and 1080×1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels, keeping text out of the top and bottom 250 pixels. Canva has presets for all three, and Magic Resize converts between them.
Is Canva good for making Instagram ads?
Yes, for image and short video creative. Brand Kit keeps variants consistent, Bulk Create produces copy variants from a sheet, and the templates are on spec. It does not check Meta policy or run the campaign, so the test-and-rotate work happens after Canva.
How many ad variants should I make in Canva?
Three to five per campaign, each differing in one element (hook, image or headline), so the winner tells you something. Then one new variant a week to replace whichever fatigues first.
Can I boost a Canva post on Instagram?
Only after it is published: schedule the design as an organic post through Canva’s Content Planner, then boost it from the Instagram app or Ads Manager. Boosting is a simplified ad with fewer objectives and no conversion optimisation; for anything measured on leads or sales, build a proper campaign instead.
Does Sprites work with Canva creative?
Yes. Upload the exported Canva files or a shared link and Sprites builds the Meta campaign around them, runs the weekly creative rotation and reports which variant is winning, with every change approved by you. It can also generate on-brand variants when the Canva set runs out.
