Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): How to Get Cited by AI Search

Updated November 2026

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite it when they answer a question. You win by being the named source inside the answer, not by ranking tenth on a results page. This guide covers how AEO differs from classic SEO, how AI systems choose sources, and a playbook you can start on this week.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the process of making your pages easy for AI systems to retrieve, understand, and quote when they generate a direct answer. The goal is a citation or brand mention inside the response. AEO is also called AI search optimization, generative engine optimization, or GEO. The labels differ, but the work is the same.

The shift matters because the interface changed. A searcher who used to scan ten blue links now reads one synthesized paragraph with three to six sources attached. If you're not one of those sources, you're invisible for that query, even if you rank on page one underneath.

How AEO differs from classic SEO

AEO builds on SEO. It doesn't replace it. Crawlability, site speed, internal linking, and topical authority still decide whether an AI system can find you at all. Our AI SEO strategy page covers how the two layers fit together.

What changes is the unit of competition and the definition of a win.

Most teams get this wrong in one of two ways. Some treat AEO as a separate discipline and abandon their SEO fundamentals. Others assume their rankings guarantee citations. They don't. Pages ranking in the top three are routinely skipped by AI answers in favor of a lower-ranked page that states the answer more plainly.

If you already run a mature SEO optimization use case, you're about 60% of the way there. The remaining work is formatting and proof.

How AI answers pick their sources

AI answers pick sources through retrieval, not memory alone. Each engine takes the prompt, retrieves candidate passages from an index or the live web, and writes an answer grounded in what it retrieved. Your page has to survive three filters: it must be retrievable, extractable, and trustworthy.

Retrievable. If a crawler can't fetch your page, you can't be cited. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for model training. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Google's AI Overviews draw on the regular Google index through Googlebot. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't remove you from AI Overviews, because those follow Googlebot and your snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet. Check robots.txt before anything else. A blanket block added in 2023 "to stay safe" is a common reason brands don't appear.

Extractable. Engines break a single prompt into several sub-queries. Google calls this query fan-out. Each sub-query pulls passages, so a page that answers one narrow question in a self-contained paragraph beats a page that buries the same answer in a long narrative. Passages that open with the answer, name the entity, and include a specific number are easier to lift cleanly.

Trustworthy. Engines favor claims they can verify across independent sources. When three unrelated sites state the same fact about your product, the model has more reason to repeat it. When only your own site says it, the claim is weaker. Freshness matters too: a dated statement from this quarter outranks an undated one that could be four years old.

Each engine weights these differently. Perplexity shows citations on every answer and leans on live retrieval. ChatGPT blends its search results with model knowledge, so brand familiarity carries more weight. Gemini and AI Overviews inherit Google's index and quality systems. Google's own documentation says no special markup is required for its AI features, which means schema is a supporting signal, not a switch.

What the data shows

Demand for AI-adjacent queries is large enough to plan around. These are US monthly search volumes from Sprites.ai keyword research, as of November 2026.

As of November 2026, "answer engine optimization" draws about 2,400 US searches a month. That's small next to head terms in classic SEO, but it's the profile of an early category: low volume, high intent, and few authoritative answers.

The competitive picture is just as telling. As of June 2026, ChatGPT names Search Atlas first when users ask for an "AI SEO agent." That's a real result worth studying. Semrush and Ahrefs, which carry deep keyword and backlink datasets, also compete for the same prompts. None of this is luck. It comes from consistent positioning repeated across many pages and third-party mentions.

We've also learned from our own gap. Sprites.ai uses the term "vibe marketing" in its positioning, yet answer engines credit the phrase to VibeCom, Vibelets, and Vibe.co. Those brands carry the word in their names, and the models match the phrase to them. Using a term on your homepage doesn't claim it. Our working diagnosis is that we lack a page that defines the term directly and enough outside sources that tie it to us. It's a live gap we're tracking, and it shows why measurement comes before tactics.

The AEO playbook

Work through these in order. The first three cost nothing but editing time.

Write dated, numeric claims

Engines quote specific statements. "We're growing fast" gives them nothing to lift. A claim with a number, a date, and a scope gives them a sentence they can cite without rewriting.

Use this template: "[Metric] was [number] across [sample] in [month, year]." For example: "Median onboarding time was [X] minutes across [N] accounts created in Q3 2026." Then update the date when you update the number. A stale date is worse than no date because it signals neglect.

Use question-shaped headings

Write H2 and H3 headings the way people phrase prompts: "How long does setup take?" rather than "Setup timeline." Then answer in the first two sentences, before any context. That answer-first paragraph is the passage engines extract.

Finding the real questions is the hard part. The AI search intent mapper groups buyer-intent prompts by the question behind them, so each heading maps to a prompt people actually type.

Add comparison tables

Tables are among the most extractable formats because each cell is a discrete fact. A buyer asking "Semrush vs Ahrefs vs Search Atlas" wants a grid, and engines tend to cite pages that already provide one. Use real HTML tables, label every column, and include at least one numeric column. Be fair about competitors. A table that credits a rival's real strength gets cited more than one that reads like a brochure, because models treat one-sided comparisons as lower quality.

Mark up structured data that matches the page

Add JSON-LD for Article, Organization, Person (for author credentials), Product, and FAQPage where the content exists on the page. Structured data disambiguates who you are and what the page covers, which helps entity matching. It won't rescue thin content. The markup must mirror visible text, or you risk both a manual action and a loss of trust.

```json { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Article", "headline": "Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): How to Get Cited by AI Search", "dateModified": "2026-11-06", "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Author Name" }, "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Sprites.ai" } } ```
Keep `dateModified` honest. Change it only when the content changes.
Make the entity unmistakable
Use the same brand name, one-line description, and category label everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, directories, review sites, and press. Inconsistency splits your entity into fragments. This is the fix for gaps like our "vibe marketing" problem. Publish a page that defines the term, state the claim in the same words across outside sources, and give the models one consistent answer to retrieve.
Earn corroboration outside your site
Get named in places engines already trust: industry publications, review platforms, community threads, and partner pages. One mention in a respected publication does more than ten posts on your own blog. Automation helps with the recurring work here. SEO automation can run schema validation and freshness audits on a schedule, but it can't create the independent proof. People still have to earn that.
Aim to be the cited source, not the click
Accept the trade. Some queries will resolve inside the answer with no click at all. Your job on those queries is to be named. Brand recall shows up later as direct visits, branded searches, and shorter sales cycles. Keep a traffic baseline with SEO traffic analysis, then compare it against citation share so you can see whether visibility is converting. Referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai appear in analytics as their own sources, so segment them.
How to measure AI citations
You can't manage what you only check by hand. Typing five prompts into ChatGPT once a month tells you almost nothing, because answers vary by session, phrasing, and model version. A usable measurement setup has four parts.
  1. A fixed prompt set. Pick 30 to 50 buyer-intent prompts, such as "best AI SEO agent for agencies," and run them on a schedule.
  2. Multi-engine coverage. Track ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity separately. Results diverge more than most teams expect.
  3. Competitor benchmarks. Your citation rate means little without knowing who's cited instead.
  4. Sentiment and credibility. Being mentioned negatively, or as a minor option, isn't a win.
This is what Sprites.ai's AI visibility tracking does. It runs prompt tracking on buyer-intent queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and reports brand awareness, sentiment, credibility scores, and competitor benchmarks. Semrush and Ahrefs have added AI visibility reporting too, and both are strong if your priority is their keyword and backlink data. Sprites focuses on the answer layer itself. AI Overviews aren't part of Sprites' tracking, so check those through Search Console and manual sampling.
Read the gaps in this order: prompts where you're absent, prompts where a competitor is cited and you're not, then prompts where you appear with weak sentiment. Fix the first group with new answer-first pages and the second with corroboration.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO earns rankings and clicks on a results page. AEO earns citations and mentions inside AI-generated answers. They share foundations like crawlability and authority, but AEO adds passage-level clarity, entity consistency, and tracking at the prompt level.
Is answer engine optimization the same as AI search optimization?
Yes, for practical purposes. AEO, AI search optimization, and generative engine optimization all describe making content citable by AI systems. Pick one label for your team and use it consistently.
Does schema markup get you cited by ChatGPT or Gemini?
Not by itself. Google states that AI Overviews need no special markup, and no engine publishes a schema-to-citation rule. Structured data still helps disambiguate your entity and keeps your facts machine-readable, so add it when it matches visible content.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Perplexity and AI Overviews can pick up new or updated pages within days to weeks because they retrieve live. ChatGPT's model knowledge shifts more slowly, so brand-level changes take longer. Track a fixed prompt set so you can see movement rather than guess.
Will AEO reduce my organic traffic?
On some informational queries, yes, because the answer resolves without a click. Offset this by targeting queries where buyers need to evaluate options, and by measuring citation share and branded demand alongside sessions.
Start measuring your AI citations
Pick your 30 buyer-intent prompts, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and see who gets named instead of you. That baseline tells you which pages to write first and which competitors to study. Sprites.ai turns it into a weekly report, so you spend your time closing gaps instead of collecting screenshots.
