ChatGPT is excellent at everything upstream of the account and unreliable at everything inside it. Briefs, drafts, positioning, analysing a file you paste in: genuinely good. Reading yesterday's CPA or pausing an ad set: not without a connector, and OpenAI restricts write-capable custom connectors to Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Everything below is organised around that line.
Last updated September 14, 2026. Most guides on this topic were written before developer mode existed and before Connectors was renamed Plugins in July 2026; where a path is named here it is the current one.
What actually changed, and when
The useful parts of this answer all moved in the last eighteen months. If your mental model of ChatGPT-for-marketing is "a very good writer with no hands", it is out of date.
| What | Where it is now | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Custom connectors | Settings → Security and login → Developer mode, then Settings → Plugins to create the app | You can add any remote MCP server, not just the built-in list. Write-capable ones are restricted to Business, Enterprise and Edu. |
| The Connectors section | Renamed Plugins in July 2026 | Guides that send you to an Advanced tab under Connectors are describing a UI that no longer exists. |
| Interactive results | Apps SDK, rendered in the thread | A connector can draw an actual card — an editable budget, a creative preview — instead of returning a paragraph of text. |
| Tool caching | Per app, refreshed manually | When a server ships new tools, ChatGPT keeps showing the old list until you press Refresh on the app. |
The practical upshot: ChatGPT's ceiling for marketing work is now set by what you connect it to rather than by the model. The ChatGPT setup guide has the exact path, and OpenAI's own article is the primary source.
Eight jobs it does well
Ranked by how much time each actually saves, not by how impressive the demo is.
- Turning a messy brief into a specific one. Paste the Slack thread, the half-formed goal and the constraints; ask for the brief a freelancer could execute without asking a question. This is the highest-leverage use and almost nobody does it.
- First drafts at volume. Fifteen headlines, four descriptions, three angles. Treat every one as a starting point — the second draft, after you have said what is wrong with the first, is where the usable copy appears.
- Reading a file you paste in. Export the search-terms report, paste it, ask which terms spent with no conversions. It is genuinely good at this, and it is the closest thing to account analysis you get without a connector.
- Positioning arguments. "Argue the opposite case for this messaging" is the prompt that earns its keep. It is a better adversary than it is an author.
- Competitor and category research. With web access, one place to ask what a competitor claims, how the category is described, and which phrases keep recurring. Verify the citations; it still occasionally cites a page that does not say what it says.
- Structured extraction. Fifty landing pages into a table of offer, proof and CTA. Tedious, mechanical, and exactly what it is for.
- Image concepts. Its image generation is the strongest of the general assistants, which matters for concepting rather than for final creative.
- Explaining a platform's own documentation. "What does this Google Ads error actually mean" saves more time than any prompt template you will find in a listicle.
Four it cannot, and only one has a fix
- Reach your accounts. Unaided, ChatGPT has no Google Ads, Meta or GA4 data at all, so any number it gives you about your own performance is invented. Fixable: a custom MCP connector, on the plans that allow one.
- Remember your account. Every conversation starts without your campaign structure, your audiences or what you tried in March, unless you paste it again. Not fixable by prompting.
- Run a loop. It answers and stops. Watching a campaign, noticing a CPA drift on Thursday and acting on it is a different shape of software.
- Tell you when it is guessing. The register is identical whether it read a document or inferred a plausible answer. For marketing numbers this is the expensive failure, and it is why a connector that returns real account data changes the value of the whole conversation.
The long version of this argument, with the five specific limits, is AI marketing agent vs ChatGPT.
Claude vs ChatGPT for marketing
The honest answer is that this matters less than the argument about it suggests, and where it does matter it is about plumbing rather than prose.
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| Custom connectors | Developer mode on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu (web). Write-capable ones restricted to the workspace plans. | Every plan including Free, which is capped at one custom connector (Anthropic). |
| Interactive results | Apps SDK cards, in developer mode | Renders connector cards in the thread by default |
| Image generation | The stronger of the two | Not a focus |
| Long documents | Good | Generally better at holding a long brief in view |
| Web research | Built in and mature | Available, and improving |
| Setup friction for a marketer | Two settings screens and a mode you have to enable | Paste a URL under Connectors |
Pick on what the team already has open. If you want the interactive approval card and the lowest setup friction, Claude; the connector shortlist covers what reaches real marketing data there. If you are standardised on ChatGPT or you need its image generation, the ChatGPT path reaches the same servers. Both are covered in Sprites vs ChatGPT.
Wiring ChatGPT to your accounts
Four steps, and the second is where most people get stuck because the section was renamed.
1. Turn on developer mode
Settings → Security and login → Developer mode. ChatGPT warns that custom connectors run third-party code on your behalf; read it rather than clicking through it. On Business and Enterprise, an admin has to allow developer mode before you see the switch.
2. Create the app under Plugins
Settings → Plugins, then +. This section was called Connectors until July 2026. If a guide tells you to look for an Advanced tab under Connectors, stop reading it — everything else in it is the same vintage.
3. Paste the endpoint and choose OAuth
Name it, paste the MCP server URL, set Authentication to OAuth, confirm you trust the application, and create. A well-built remote server publishes its own client metadata, so there is no client ID or secret to supply.
4. Connect, then check the composer
Sign in on the server's consent screen and read the scopes. The app then appears under the Developer mode tool in the composer. If a server ships new tools later, press Refresh on the app — ChatGPT caches the tool list and will otherwise keep offering the old one.
Five prompts that are worth keeping
Not a list of a hundred. These work because each one supplies the context the model would otherwise have to invent.
- "Here is our positioning, our last three ads and what underperformed. Argue why the messaging is wrong before you write anything."
- "Turn this thread into a brief a freelancer could execute without asking me a question. List what is still ambiguous at the end."
- "Here is the search terms report. Which terms spent over $50 with no conversion, and which of those are genuinely irrelevant rather than just unlucky?"
- "Rewrite this for someone who has already rejected the obvious version of this pitch."
- "With Sprites, how did Google Ads do last 30 days versus the 30 before?" — the one that only works once a connector is attached, and the one that changes what the tool is for.
Where to go next
- The plumbing, in plain English: what MCP is.
- Setting it up: Sprites in ChatGPT, or the whole connector hub.
- The category argument: what an AI marketing agent is.
- Advertising inside ChatGPT rather than working in it: the ChatGPT ads guide.
ChatGPT for marketing: common questions
Is ChatGPT good for marketing?
For anything that ends in words or a decision you will make yourself, yes — briefs, first drafts, positioning arguments, analysing a spreadsheet you paste in. For anything that ends in a change to a live account, it needs a connector, and even then the judgement about what should change has to come from somewhere.
Can ChatGPT access my Google Ads or Meta account?
Not on its own. With a custom MCP connector added through developer mode it can, and OpenAI restricts fully write-capable custom connectors to Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Without one, ChatGPT has no account data at all — anything it says about your performance is invented.
Claude or ChatGPT for marketing?
Claude is the better default for long-document work and for connector-driven workflows, because custom connectors exist on every plan including Free and the interactive card renders in the thread. ChatGPT is the better default for image generation, for web research in one place, and for teams already standardised on it. The gap is narrower than the argument about it suggests.
What is developer mode in ChatGPT?
The setting that lets you add your own MCP server as a custom connector, rather than choosing from the built-in list. It lives in Settings → Security and login, and the apps themselves are created under Settings → Plugins — a section called Connectors until July 2026, which is why older guides send you to a tab that no longer exists.
What can ChatGPT not do for marketing?
Four things, and a connector fixes only the first. It cannot reach your accounts unaided; it has no memory of your account structure between conversations unless you paste it; it cannot run an optimisation loop that watches a live campaign; and it will not tell you when it is guessing.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need for marketing work?
Plus is enough for writing, analysis and research. Custom connectors through developer mode are on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web, but write-capable ones are restricted to the workspace plans — so a team that wants an assistant that changes things needs Business or above.
Are ChatGPT marketing prompts worth copying?
The good ones are the ones that supply context you would otherwise have to be asked for: the audience, the constraint, the thing you have already tried, the format of the answer. A prompt that is only a role and a task produces a generic answer no matter how long the list you copied it from.
