What this template does

A thumbnail has one job: make the title worth clicking when both appear side by side in a feed. This template designs for that pairing. Sprites reads the title, the script or a summary of the video, and your channel style, and proposes three to five concepts that each promise the payoff differently: a result, a contrast, a face reacting to something, an object with a single word. It then generates the images with its image tools at 1280x720 and returns them with the reasoning.

Text on the thumbnail is treated as a separate decision. Sprites writes overlays of one to three words that add to the title rather than repeat it, and renders each concept with and without text so you can see which reads at small size. Brand colors, fonts you name and a consistent layout across a series are applied so a channel page looks like one channel.

If you have a photo of yourself or the product, Sprites builds the concepts around it, placing it on new backgrounds with the expression or angle the concept calls for. Sprites generates the thumbnails; it does not upload them or run YouTube tests. You pick, upload and, if you use a testing feature on YouTube, test.

Inputs and outputs

What you provide

  • The video title and the script, summary or link to the video
  • Your channel link or past thumbnails, so the style matches
  • Brand colors and fonts, or permission to propose them
  • Optional: a photo of the presenter or product, and thumbnails from other channels you like or dislike

What you get

  • Three to five thumbnail concepts, each explained in a sentence
  • Rendered images at 1280x720 per concept, with and without text overlay
  • Text overlay options of one to three words that complement the title
  • A small-size preview of each so you can judge legibility in a feed
  • A recommendation on which two to test first and why

How it runs

  1. Step 1

    Read the video

Sprites reads the title and script or summary, identifies the payoff the viewer is promised, and studies the style of your existing thumbnails.

  2. Step 2

    Propose concepts

Writes three to five concepts that each promise the payoff differently, with the subject, composition, emotion and overlay for each.

  3. Step 3

    Generate the images

Renders each concept at 1280x720 in your brand style, placing your presenter or product photo on the new scene if you provided one.

  4. Step 4

    Add text and check legibility

Produces text and no-text versions, then previews each at feed size and flags concepts that lose clarity when small.

  5. Step 5

    Hand off

Returns the images with a recommendation on what to test. You upload to YouTube. Ask for variants of the winner for the rest of the series.

Frequently asked questions

Does it generate the actual images or just ideas?

+

Both. Sprites writes the concepts and then generates the images with its image tools at 1280x720, with and without text overlays. You download the ones you want and upload them to YouTube.

Can it use a photo of me or my product?

+

Yes. Upload the photo and Sprites builds the concepts around it, placing the subject on a new background or scene that matches each concept. Results are strongest with a clear, well-lit photo against a simple background.

Will the thumbnails match my channel style?

+

Yes, when you share the channel or past thumbnails and your brand colors and fonts. Sprites keeps the layout consistent across a series and varies only the concept, so a channel page reads as one channel.

Does Sprites upload or A/B test the thumbnails?

+

No. Sprites generates the images and recommends which two to test; uploading and testing happen in YouTube Studio. Sprites has no access to your channel analytics, so bring the results back if you want the next set to build on the winner.

Can I run this from Claude or ChatGPT?

+

Yes. Sprites ships an official MCP server, so you can request thumbnails from Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or any MCP-compatible assistant, or in the Sprites app, with the same image tools.
