What every number here assumes
- One ad is 4 to 6 shots, cut to 15 to 30 seconds, 9:16.
- A usable shot takes 3 to 5 generations. Failed and off-brand takes are paid for too.
- Credits are priced at the plan's own monthly rate, not a first-month promo.
- Prices from each vendor's own pricing page and help docs, checked October 2, 2026.
Runway alternatives at a glance
Five tools sell clips, three sell avatar ads, and one sells finished ads. Costs are per finished 15 to 30 second ad, at each vendor's published rates.
| Option | What it is for | Cost per finished usable ad | Commercial-use terms | Editing still needed | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Director by Sprites | Finished ads, not credits: a full creative team writes, makes and edits the videos. | No credits and no generations to buy. Apply for the private beta. | Made for your brand, to run as ads. | None. Every Monday you get finished, on-brand video ads, reviewed by a human. | Advertisers who want ads to test, not a tool to learn. You pick the winners; Sprites ships the campaigns. |
| Higgsfield | One credit balance across Kling, Seedance, Veo and Higgsfield models, plus UGC and Marketing Studio presets. | $19 to $49 in generations (Seedance 2.5, 5s, audio), before editing | Paid plans include commercial use and export without a watermark. Free generations carry a Higgsfield watermark. | Clips only. Script, shot list, cut, captions, voiceover and brand checks are yours. | Creators and editors who want every model in one place and will do the cut themselves. |
| Kling | A text and image to video model with native audio, from Kuaishou. | $7.81 to $20 in generations (Kling 3.0, 1080p, 5s, audio), before editing | Paid members may use output commercially and remove the watermark. Free users may not use output commercially without written permission, and must keep the Kling brand on it. | Clips only. Script, shot list, cut, captions and brand checks are yours. | Hands-on creators who want strong motion at a low price per second. |
| Seedance | ByteDance's video model, sold through Dreamina, the BytePlus API and resellers. | $34 to $85 in generations (Seedance 2.5 API, 1080p, 5s), before editing | You own the outputs, but Dreamina's terms make commercial use conditional: eligibility "depends on the applicable Dreamina terms, the content you create, and the models or assets involved". Free downloads are watermarked. | Clips only. Script, shot list, cut, captions and brand checks are yours. | Teams with a developer who want to wire generation into their own pipeline. |
| Veo | Google's video model with native audio, in Flow, Gemini and the Gemini API. | $12 to $29 in generations (Veo 3.1 Fast API, 1080p, 8s, audio), before editing | Google does not claim ownership of what you generate through the API. Every output carries an invisible SynthID mark. | Clips of up to 8 seconds. Script, shot list, cut, captions and brand checks are yours. | Teams already paying for Google AI, or building on the Gemini API. |
| HeyGen | Talking-head avatar videos from a script, with voice cloning and translation. | Avatar IV costs 31 credits a minute, so a 30 second ad is about 16 credits, about $0.77 on Creator ($29 for 600 credits). | Paid plans: you own the output. Free plan output is for personal, non-commercial evaluation only, and watermarked. | A finished presenter video. The script, hook and ad structure are yours. | Explainers, founder videos and translations rather than scroll-stopping ads. |
| Arcads | AI actors reading your script as UGC-style ads. | A talking actor costs 800 credits a minute; Starter includes 8,000 credits a month. Arcads publishes no pricing page with dollar prices. | A non-exclusive, personal, non-transferable license that allows distribution, so ads are allowed. Arcads says it cannot grant an exclusive license. | A finished UGC-style clip. The script, hooks and variations are yours. | Performance teams who write their own scripts and want many actor variations. |
| Creatify | Product URL in, avatar video ads out, with ad templates. | A video ad costs 5 credits per 15 seconds, so a 30 second ad is 10 credits: $3.90 on Starter ($39 for 100 credits). | "You own all of your creatives, even after your plan ends." Free plan exports are watermarked. | A templated ad. Picking the angle, checking claims and testing are yours. | Ecommerce teams who need many templated product ads fast. |
| Sora | OpenAI's video model. | Not available. | Not available. | Not available. | Nobody now: OpenAI closed the Sora app in April 2026 and removed the Sora 2 API on September 24, 2026. |
Why advertisers look past Runway
- Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits per 5 second generation. A finished ad comes to $11 to $28 on Pro, and Pro's 2,250 credits cover one to three ads a month.
- Runway says it plainly: a generation that completes is charged "even if the result doesn't match your prompt". Only errors come back.
- The old Unlimited plan stopped selling on June 1, 2026. Unlimited Mode on Pro and Max covers only supported models, and Runway says it "may take longer to start".
| Plan | Monthly price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $15 | 625 credits a month ($12 billed annually) |
| Pro | $35 | 2,250 credits a month ($28 billed annually) |
| Max | $95 | 9,500 credits a month ($76 billed annually) |
What one finished ad costs in credits
Assuming 4 to 6 shots per ad and 3 to 5 generations per usable shot, at each vendor's published rate. Editing is not included.
| Tool | One generation | Price per generation | Generations per ad | Spent per ad | Dollars per ad | If every take worked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Higgsfield | Seedance 2.5, 5s, audio | 33 credits ($1.62 on Plus) | 12 to 30 | 396 to 990 credits | $19 to $49 | $6.47 to $9.70 |
| Runway | Gen-4.5, 5s | 60 credits ($0.93 on Pro) | 12 to 30 | 720 to 1,800 credits | $11 to $28 | $3.73 to $5.60 |
| Kling | Kling 3.0, 1080p, 5s, audio | 60 credits ($0.65 on Pro) | 12 to 30 | 720 to 1,800 credits | $7.81 to $20 | $2.60 to $3.91 |
| Seedance | Seedance 2.5 API, 1080p, 5s | $0.57/s x 5s = $2.84 | 12 to 30 | 60 to 150 seconds of generation | $34 to $85 | $11 to $17 |
| Veo | Veo 3.1 Fast API, 1080p, 8s, audio | $0.12/s x 8s = $0.96 | 12 to 30 | 96 to 240 seconds of generation | $12 to $29 | $3.84 to $5.76 |
The Runway arithmetic, step by step:
- One Gen-4.5, 5s generation costs 60 credits. Pro is $35 a month for 2,250 credits, so a credit costs $0.02 and a generation costs $0.93.
- An ad is 4 to 6 shots. A usable shot takes 3 to 5 generations. That is 4 x 3 = 12 to 6 x 5 = 30 generations.
- 12 to 30 generations x 60 credits = 720 to 1,800 credits, or $11 to $28 per finished ad.
- If every take were usable, the same ad would cost $3.73 to $5.60. The difference is what variance costs you.
- Pro's 2,250 monthly credits cover 1 to 3 finished ads a month at this rate.
Why 3 to 5 generations a shot: the same prompt gives a different clip every run. Hands melt, a logo warps, the product changes colour, the actor looks at the wrong spot. The vendors say it themselves. Runway leaves its fixed-seed option off by default "to give you a wide variety of results". Dreamina's terms say outputs "may exhibit unpredictable behavior". Kling's own credit guide tells you to reserve credits for retries.
Which alternative for which job
- Cheapest clips: Kling, $7.81 to $20 per finished ad.
- Every model on one balance: Higgsfield, $19 to $49 on Seedance 2.5.
- API-first: Veo 3.1 Fast or Seedance through their APIs, charged only for successful generations.
- Avatar ads from a script: HeyGen, Arcads or Creatify.
- Finished ads with no generations to manage: Director.
Do you get credits back for bad generations?
For a generation that errors out, mostly yes. For one that finishes and is unusable, no. That second kind is most of the waste.
| Tool | Failed and unusable generations | Commercial use | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Higgsfield | Failed generations refund automatically, except Grok, which is charged the moment it starts. A generation that completes is spent, whatever it looks like: discarding a result "does not refund the generation cost". | Paid plans include commercial use and export without a watermark. Free generations carry a Higgsfield watermark. | Higgsfield Help Center: Generation is stuck or failed; Higgsfield Terms of Use 4.4 and Help Center: Watermark and how to remove it |
| Runway | Credits come back only when a generation ends in an error. "If a generation completes, even if the result doesn't match your prompt, doesn't preserve likeness, or is otherwise unsatisfactory, credits are consumed and cannot be automatically reinstated." | No non-commercial restriction on any plan. Free plan videos carry a Runway watermark; paid plans do not. | Runway Help Center: Can I have credits refunded? (updated September 24, 2026); Runway Terms of Use 4.4 and Help Center: Free plan details |
| Kling | Credits are deducted when a generation starts and refunded if it fails. Once the paid service is activated, fees are non-refundable, and nothing refunds a generation that completes. | Paid members may use output commercially and remove the watermark. Free users may not use output commercially without written permission, and must keep the Kling brand on it. | Kling AI Credits Policy and Terms of Paid Service; Kling AI Terms of Paid Service 3.1.2 and 7.2, and Terms of Service 4.6 |
| Seedance | On the API, "You are only charged for successfully generated videos." Dreamina, the consumer app, publishes no policy on credits for failed generations, and nothing refunds a completed one. | You own the outputs, but Dreamina's terms make commercial use conditional: eligibility "depends on the applicable Dreamina terms, the content you create, and the models or assets involved". Free downloads are watermarked. | BytePlus ModelArk model pricing and Dreamina Terms of Service; Dreamina Terms of Service and Dreamina pricing FAQ |
| Veo | On the API, "You will only be charged if your video is successfully generated." A completed clip is charged whatever it shows. | Google does not claim ownership of what you generate through the API. Every output carries an invisible SynthID mark. | Gemini API pricing; Gemini API Additional Terms of Service |
The refund covers the crash, not the miss. A clip with a warped product, the wrong motion or an off-brand look is a completed generation, and every vendor here charges for it in full.
What Runway users report
Ratings and threads as they stood on the dates given. Read them as patterns, not verdicts.
- Runway's Trustpilot profile shows 1.1 from 350 reviews (October 2, 2026). A September 27, 2026 reviewer wrote that it took "thousands of credits to actually get a video right".
- An r/generativeAI thread from May 25, 2026, "I need the best Runway alternatives right now", reports about $20 spent on one mediocre clip that took two hours.
Free tiers vs commercial use
Free tiers are for trying the model. Kling's free output is not for commercial use, and every free tier here watermarks what it makes.
| Tool | Free tier | Can you run it as an ad? |
|---|---|---|
| Higgsfield | Limited daily credits, watermarked. | Paid plans include commercial use and export without a watermark. Free generations carry a Higgsfield watermark. |
| Runway | 125 credits, once. Watermarked. | No non-commercial restriction on any plan. Free plan videos carry a Runway watermark; paid plans do not. |
| Kling | Basic plan, $0, no monthly credits. Not for commercial use. | Paid members may use output commercially and remove the watermark. Free users may not use output commercially without written permission, and must keep the Kling brand on it. |
| Seedance | Dreamina gives daily free credits (120 a day in its August 2026 baseline), watermarked. | You own the outputs, but Dreamina's terms make commercial use conditional: eligibility "depends on the applicable Dreamina terms, the content you create, and the models or assets involved". Free downloads are watermarked. |
| Veo | Flow gives every user 50 credits a day. | Google does not claim ownership of what you generate through the API. Every output carries an invisible SynthID mark. |

When a tool is the wrong answer
Every tool on this page sells generations. An advertiser needs ads.
A generation is a 5 to 8 second clip. An ad is a hook, a script, 4 to 6 shots that match, a cut, captions, a voice, a brand check. Then a new one next week, for every angle you want to test.
On Meta that cadence is not optional. Meta Andromeda reads the creative to pick who sees an ad, and a winner now lasts 2 to 4 weeks, so the next one has to be ready.
- You need several new ads a week, not one good clip.
- Nobody on the team edits video.
- You already pay for credits on two or more of these tools.
- You judge creative by CPA and ROAS, not by how a clip looks in a demo.
If two of those are true, the tool is the wrong layer. That is what Director is for. Director by Sprites is a full creative team. Every Monday you get finished, on-brand video ads, reviewed by a human. You pick the winners. Sprites ships the campaigns. You never write a prompt.
Director is in private beta. The application asks for your monthly ad spend.
