What is Meta Andromeda?
Meta Andromeda is Meta's ad retrieval engine: the first stage of ad delivery, which narrows tens of millions of eligible ads to the few thousand that compete for one person's impression.
Every impression on Facebook and Instagram starts with retrieval. Before any auction, Meta has to decide which ads are even worth scoring for this person, right now. Andromeda is that decision.
Meta described it on its engineering blog, Engineering at Meta, in December 2024: a deep neural network running on NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips and Meta's own MTIA accelerators, built to handle "the exponential growth in volume of eligible ads" that Advantage+ and generative AI tools were creating.

The short version: the old system matched ads to audiences you described. Andromeda matches ads to people it predicts, and the strongest signal it has about who an ad is for is the ad itself.
The Meta Andromeda update: what changed in 2025 and 2026
Meta moved retrieval and ranking onto much larger models and switched Advantage+ on by default. Advertisers felt it as broad targeting winning, interest stacks losing, and winners fading faster.
- Dec 2024Engineering at Meta publishes Andromeda, the next-generation retrieval engine behind Advantage+, with a 10,000x increase in model capacity.
- Feb 2025Advantage+ shopping campaigns become Advantage+ sales campaigns, and Advantage+ turns on by default for new sales, app and leads campaigns.
- 2025Andromeda-era delivery reaches most accounts. Broad audiences and one consolidated campaign start beating tightly targeted ad sets.
- Nov 2025Meta publishes GEM, its Generative Ads Recommendation Model: 5% more conversions on Instagram and 3% more on Facebook Feed since its rollout began in Q2 2025.
- 2026The lifespan of a winning ad halves. Creative volume, not audience setup, is the lever that separates accounts.
None of this arrived as one dated switch in Ads Manager. That is why "meta andromeda update" is searched so much: accounts changed behaviour without a release note, and the explanation came from Meta's engineering team rather than its ads team.
Why creative is the targeting now
Andromeda reads the hook, the format, the people on screen and the promise of every ad, and uses that to decide who sees it. Two different ads find two different audiences, even with identical targeting.
Under the old system, targeting lived in the ad set. You picked interests, lookalikes and exclusions, and every ad in the set chased the same people. Under Andromeda, targeting lives in the creative. A founder-to-camera video and a product demo in the same ad set reach different buyers, because the engine can tell them apart.
- Different concepts reach different people. A new angle, a new speaker or a new format opens a new pocket of the audience.
- Near-copies do not. Swapping a colour or a headline on the same video gives the engine nothing new to match, and it tends to be treated as the same ad.
- Broad beats narrow. Narrow targeting shrinks the pool the engine can match against. The creative does the narrowing now.
This is why hooks matter more than they used to. The first seconds decide both who stops and who the engine thinks the ad is for. See what is working in real ad hooks, and size every format right with the Meta ad specs.
From the founder
Evergreen isn't a single ad. It's a system.
The lifespan of a winning Meta ad has halved in 2026. 6–8 weeks was the old normal. 2–4 weeks is the new one. Because Meta's AI got better at finding AND exhausting your best audience. Smart advertisers are building ad systems, not ads.
Meta's Andromeda engine launched in 2025 with a 10,000× increase in model complexity. It matches your ad to the perfect person faster than any system before it. Then it burns through them just as fast.
The anxiety every advertiser feels: "when is my best ad going to stop working?"
This isn't paranoia. It's math.
Motion analyzed $1.3 billion in Meta ad spend last year. Only 5% of ads ever become real winners.
Half never get meaningful spend at all. The winners that do break through? They carry roughly 64% of total budget in enterprise accounts.
You are betting the house on an asset with a 2-week shelf life.
The marketers I see winning aren't protecting their best ad. They're building the pipeline behind it. They treat every winner as a clue.
What hook landed, what format, what angle, and they ship variants before the decay starts.
The ones I see panicking are still waiting for a single evergreen to carry them. There's no such thing anymore.
Evergreen isn't a single ad. It's a system.
The question was never "when will my ad stop working?"
It was always "why didn't I have the next one ready?"
What Andromeda means for creative volume
Faster matching means faster exhaustion. Andromeda finds the best audience for a winner quickly, then saturates it, so a winning Meta ad lasts 2 to 4 weeks at scale instead of 6 to 8.
| Before Andromeda | Andromeda era (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Winner lifespan at scale | 6 to 8 weeks | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Main lever | Audience setup | Creative concepts |
| Ads live per ad set | A handful of variations | 10 to 15 distinct concepts |
| New concepts | Monthly refresh | Every week |
| What a winner is | An asset to protect | A clue for the next five |
The math is simple. If you run 12 concepts and each lasts about 3 weeks, you need 4 new ones every week just to stand still. That is the creative treadmill, and it is why the accounts that win in 2026 run a pipeline instead of a launch calendar.
Watch it happen in your own numbers with creative analytics: frequency rises, the hook rate falls, CPA creeps up, and the ad you loved last month is spending into a wall.
Advantage+ in the Andromeda era
Advantage+ is Meta's automation layer for audience, placements, budget and creative. Andromeda is the engine underneath that makes it work, and it only works as well as the creative you feed it.
Meta built Andromeda for Advantage+. Its engineering team wrote that the engine exists to make use of the flood of eligible ads that Advantage+ automation and generative AI tools produce. Advantage+ sales campaigns now take several ad sets with up to 50 ads each, and Advantage+ is on by default for sales, app and leads objectives.
- Let Advantage+ own audience and placements. Fighting it with narrow targeting starves the retrieval stage.
- Own the creative inputs. Advantage+ can remix and resize. It cannot invent the next angle that opens a new audience.
- Feed it on a schedule. New concepts every week keep the engine matching instead of re-serving a tired winner.

The creative treadmill: direct answers
The questions every Meta advertiser asks once Andromeda starts eating their winners, answered in the first two lines.
- How often should you change your Meta ads?Every week for new concepts. A winner gets 2 to 4 weeks.
- How many Meta ads do you need?10 to 15 distinct concepts at scale. 3 to 6 on a small budget.
- Creative fatigue: why Meta ads stop workingThe four signs, why it hits faster now, and the only fix that works.
- How many new creatives do you need per week?Live concepts divided by lifespan. Usually 3 to 6 a week.
- How long does a Meta ad creative last?2 to 4 weeks at scale, down from 6 to 8.

Meta Andromeda: questions
What is Meta Andromeda?
Meta Andromeda is Meta's ad retrieval engine. It is the first stage of ad delivery on Facebook and Instagram, narrowing tens of millions of eligible ads to the few thousand that compete for each impression. Meta described it on its engineering blog in December 2024.
When did the Meta Andromeda update happen?
Meta published Andromeda on its engineering blog in December 2024, and advertisers felt the change through 2025 as it reached most accounts alongside Advantage+ becoming the default. There was no single dated switch in Ads Manager.
Does Andromeda replace targeting?
Mostly, yes. Andromeda reads your creative to decide who sees each ad, so broad audiences and distinct creative concepts now do the job that interest targeting used to do.
How does Andromeda change creative strategy?
It rewards volume and variety. Ship genuinely different concepts every week, treat each winner as a clue for the next ones, and stop spending time on small tweaks to the same ad.
How long does a winning Meta ad last in 2026?
At meaningful spend, 2 to 4 weeks. The old normal was 6 to 8 weeks. Smaller budgets stretch it because frequency builds more slowly.
Is Advantage+ the same as Andromeda?
No. Advantage+ is Meta's automation for audience, placements, budget and creative. Andromeda is the retrieval engine underneath it. Meta built Andromeda to handle the volume of ads Advantage+ produces.
How do I keep up with the creative Andromeda needs?
Run a pipeline, not a launch calendar. Director by Sprites delivers finished, human-reviewed video ads every Monday, you pick the winners, and Sprites ships the campaigns.
