The short answer
- Most Shopify ad spend runs on Google, Meta and TikTok, each connected by an official Shopify app or sales channel. Shopify's own Shop Campaigns adds a pay-per-conversion option in the Shop app.
- Google: the Google & YouTube app syncs products to Merchant Center for Shopping and Performance Max campaigns.
- Meta: the Facebook & Instagram app connects the Meta pixel and, at the Enhanced or Maximum data sharing level, the Conversions API.
- TikTok: the TikTok app syncs the catalog, installs the TikTok pixel and lets you create ads.
- Shopify Audiences builds audience lists for ad platforms, but only for Shopify Plus stores using Shopify Payments in the US or Canada.
"Shopify ads" mostly means ads for a Shopify store, run on other platforms. Shopify's main job is the plumbing: product sync, tracking and audience data. Get the plumbing right and the same budget buys more, because every platform optimizes on the purchase data Shopify sends it.
Google Shopping and Performance Max via the Google & YouTube app
Google is usually the first paid channel for a Shopify store, because Google Shopping ads catch people already searching for the product.
How the connection works, per Shopify's help center:
- Install the Google & YouTube sales channel.
- Connect your Google account and a Google Merchant Center account.
- The channel syncs products available on your online store to Merchant Center. The first sync can take up to 24 hours; later changes usually sync within a few hours.
- Fill in any product data Google needs that Shopify does not hold, such as GTINs or apparel attributes.
- Create Performance Max campaigns in Merchant Center, which you reach from the Google & YouTube channel, or build campaigns directly in Google Ads.
Performance Max from the app runs across Google's channels, including YouTube, Search, Gmail and Maps. For more control over bids and search terms, build a Standard Shopping campaign in Google Ads on the same synced feed.
The sync timing explains a common Shopify problem. A flash sale changes prices on the store immediately, the feed lags, and Google disapproves products for price mismatch. Plan sales ahead of the sync, or use automatic item updates in Merchant Center.
Meta ads via the Facebook & Instagram app
Meta is where most Shopify stores find customers who are not yet searching. The Facebook & Instagram app connects your catalog and handles tracking. The setting that matters most is data sharing:
| Level | What it uses | Blocked by ad blockers? |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Meta pixel only | Yes, the browser pixel can be blocked |
| Enhanced | Meta pixel plus Conversions API | No for the server-sent purchase event |
| Maximum | Meta pixel, Conversions API and Meta's latest ad technology | No for the server-sent purchase event |
To change it: Sales channels, then Facebook & Instagram, then Settings, then Data sharing settings. Turn on customer data sharing and choose the level. Enhanced and Maximum share customer details such as name, email, phone and location with Meta for matching, so check your privacy policy covers it.
For most stores, Standard leaves purchases unreported to Meta whenever the pixel is blocked, and Meta's bidding then optimizes on less data. Enhanced or Maximum is the usual choice. For how the agent side works, see Meta Ads with Sprites.
TikTok ads via the TikTok app
The TikTok app for Shopify does four things: syncs products to TikTok, installs the TikTok pixel in one click, lets you create TikTok ads from your own images or videos, and manages TikTok Shop orders and inventory from Shopify.
TikTok works best for products that demonstrate well on video and stores that can produce new creative every few weeks. If you cannot make video, start with Google and Meta first.
Treat TikTok as a creative channel first. Plan for several short videos per product: an unboxing, a problem and fix, a creator reaction. Judge them on cost per purchase over at least two weeks rather than on views. Install the pixel through the app before the first ad goes live, so early purchases are recorded and the campaign has conversion data to optimize toward from day one.
Shop Campaigns: Shopify's own ad program
Shop Campaigns is the one ad product Shopify runs itself. Per Shopify's help center:
- Ads run across the Shop app, the Shop website, the Shopify Product Network and optional third-party placements.
- You set an average customer acquisition cost for the campaign, with optional overrides for segments such as new or lapsed customers.
- You are charged only when a customer converts, with no upfront budget or subscription fee.
Eligibility depends on store requirements Shopify checks in the admin, and how often your ads are recommended depends on the customer experience your store provides. Because you pay per conversion, it is a low-risk test once the store converts well, but it sits beside Google and Meta rather than replacing them.
Shopify Audiences: who can use it
Shopify Audiences uses Shopify's network data to build audience lists you send to ad platforms. Shopify's help center sets the eligibility:
- Shopify Plus plan
- Shopify Payments
- Operating in and selling to the United States or Canada
- Shopify Network Intelligence activated
Shopify lists Meta, Google, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat and Criteo as supported platforms. Audience types include retargeting lists and existing-customer lists for exclusion. Shopify charges nothing extra for the app; you pay the ad platform for the media.
If you are not on Plus, this is not available, and the plan upgrade alone is rarely a reason to move. The same outcome, a list of past buyers to exclude from prospecting, can be built from a customer list upload on Meta or Google.
Budgets by store stage
There is no correct budget, but there is a correct order. A framework that fits most stores:
| Stage | Where to spend | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-traction (few or no sales) | One channel. Google Shopping if people search for your product type; Meta if they do not | Conversion rate on the product page, add-to-cart rate |
| Early traction (consistent daily sales) | Google Shopping or PMax plus one Meta prospecting campaign | Blended ROAS, cost per first purchase |
| Scaling | Add retargeting, test TikTok, add Microsoft Shopping | New customer share, contribution margin after ads |
| Established | Budget split by channel on marginal return | Incremental return per extra dollar |
Sizing a test: if your target cost per purchase is $40, a campaign needs enough budget to reach several purchases a week before automated bidding has anything to learn from. A $20 daily budget against a $40 target yields at best a few purchases a week. Use the ROAS calculator to find your break-even ROAS from margin before setting targets.
Tracking that makes the ads work
- Use the official apps for pixels and conversion events instead of pasting tags into the theme. Duplicate tags double-count purchases.
- Turn on server-side events where offered: Meta's Conversions API through Enhanced or Maximum data sharing.
- Tag every link you control with UTMs (email, influencer, organic social) so Shopify's reports can separate them from paid traffic. The UTM builder keeps naming consistent.
- Check Google conversions after setup and after any checkout change. If purchases stop appearing in Google Ads, see Shopify conversion tracking not working.
- Compare platform-reported revenue with Shopify's orders monthly. Each platform claims credit; Shopify's order count is the ground truth.
Running Shopify ads with Sprites
Sprites' proprietary marketing agent connects to your ad accounts and reads the data itself. For a Shopify store that means:
- Google Ads: fixes Merchant Center product issues for Shopping and Performance Max, builds PMax asset groups, audits search terms and wasted spend, and changes budgets.
- Meta: analyzes performance, creates and edits campaigns, ad sets and ads, builds custom and lookalike audiences, and checks pixel health.
- TikTok: reporting and analysis of spend, clicks, conversions and cost per conversion.
- Shopify SEO: bulk-improves product SEO and publishes blog posts to Shopify after approval.
Every change arrives as an editable approval card that you approve first. Google Ads and Meta together are on the Launch plan ($495 a month); see Shopify marketing and AI marketing for ecommerce for the full setup, and pricing for the 7-day trial for $1.
Next step: open the Facebook & Instagram app, check your data sharing level, and move it to Enhanced or Maximum if it is on Standard.
