Why it happens
The checkout upgrade dropped your old tag
The checkout upgrade dropped your old tag
Tags pasted into Additional scripts on the old Thank you and Order status pages do not run on the upgraded checkout. Stores that missed the August 26, 2026 deadline were upgraded automatically.
Two tracking paths count the same purchase
The Google and YouTube app plus a Tag Manager tag, or plus a GA4 import, all as primary. Conversions double and ROAS looks too good.
The Google and YouTube app lost its connection
The app was connected to a different Google Ads account, or the connection broke when an account owner changed.
Wrong counting or value
A purchase action set to count One per click, or with a fixed value instead of the order value, under-reports revenue.
How to fix it, step by step
Pick one tracking path
Use the Google and YouTube app for purchases, or a custom pixel under Settings, then Customer events. Remove the other from Additional scripts, Tag Manager or the theme.
Reconnect the app
In Shopify open the Google and YouTube app, check the connected Google account and Google Ads account, and reconnect if either is wrong.
Clean up duplicate actions
In Google Ads go to Goals, then Conversions, then Summary. Keep one purchase action as primary and set the others to secondary.
Check counting and value
Open the purchase action, click Edit settings, set Count to Every and use transaction-specific values.
Place a test order
Run a real low-value order and confirm the purchase records within a few hours.

Sprites diagnoses this
Sprites diagnoses it
Sprites finds the double count or the day purchases stopped, and cleans up the Google Ads side.
What Sprites does
- Splits purchases by conversion action, day by day, so a duplicate action or a dead one shows at a glance.
- Lines the drop up with the account change history.
- Sets duplicate purchase actions to secondary and corrects counting to Every, once you approve.
What it doesn't do
- It does not change your Shopify checkout, apps, pixels or Customer events.
- It does not read Shopify orders inside the chat, so it cannot count orders against conversions.
Questions
Why did my Shopify Google Ads conversions stop?
Most often the Thank you and Order status page upgrade. Tags in Additional scripts stopped running once the store moved to the new checkout.
Why does Google Ads show more purchases than Shopify?
Two tracking paths are counting the same order, usually the Google and YouTube app plus an older tag or a GA4 import, both set as primary.
Do I need Google Tag Manager on Shopify for Google Ads?
No. The Google and YouTube app handles purchase tracking. Use Tag Manager through a custom pixel only if you need events the app does not send.
Should the purchase action count every conversion?
Yes. Purchases should count Every, with the order value passed in, so revenue and ROAS are right.
