Social Media Scheduler: 7 Tools, Prices and Networks (2026)

The short answer

  • A social media scheduler queues posts and publishes them to your social accounts at set times, from one calendar.
  • Entry prices from vendor pricing pages (October 2026): Buffer Essentials $5/mo per channel, Later Starter $18.75/mo billed annually, Metricool Starter $20/mo, SocialBee Bootstrap $29/mo, Sprout Social Essentials $79 per seat/mo billed annually, Hootsuite Standard $99 per user/mo billed annually.
  • Choose on three things first: the networks it publishes to, how pricing scales (per channel, per seat, or per brand), and whether you need approvals, an inbox or listening.
  • Schedulers publish what you already wrote. Sprites Social Studio also generates the ideas, plans the calendar and writes the posts, then schedules and publishes to X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.

A social media scheduler lets you write posts ahead of time, put them on a calendar, and have them publish automatically to each network. The good ones also handle media, previews per network, team approvals and analytics.

Prices range from $5 a month to several hundred per seat. The difference is mostly in team features, inboxes and listening, not in the scheduling itself.

What to look for in a scheduler

  1. Network coverage. Check the exact networks, and the post types on each. Reels, carousels, Stories, YouTube Shorts and TikTok videos are not supported equally everywhere.
  2. Pricing model. Per channel (Buffer), per seat (Sprout Social, Hootsuite), per brand or social set (Metricool, Later), or per profile tier (SocialBee). A solo marketer with 12 accounts and a 6-person team with 4 accounts pay very differently on each.
  3. Post limits. Some entry plans cap scheduled posts per profile per month.
  4. Approvals. Agencies and regulated businesses need a draft, review, approve flow.
  5. Inbox and listening. Replying to comments and DMs from one place, and tracking brand mentions, are what push tools up the price ladder. Skip them if you do not need them.
  6. AI writing. Most schedulers now include an AI caption assistant. It drafts copy inside the composer; it does not plan your content.

Plan details that change the math

  • Buffer also has a $0 plan for up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel. Paid channels above 10 get a volume discount. The Team plan adds unlimited team members and approval workflows.
  • Later Starter includes 1 user and 30 posts per profile per month. Growth ($37.50/mo billed annually) raises that to 180 posts and 2 users; Scale ($82.50/mo) is unlimited. All plans have a 14-day trial.
  • Metricool has a $0 plan for 1 brand with 20 posts a month, without LinkedIn or X. Starter covers up to 10 brands, priced by brand count.
  • SocialBee Bootstrap covers 5 profiles and 1 user; Accelerate ($49/mo) 10 profiles; Pro ($99/mo) 25 profiles and 3 users. 14-day trial.
  • Sprout Social Essentials and Standard ($199 per seat/mo) include 5 social profiles; Professional ($299) and Advanced ($399) are unlimited. 30-day trial.
  • Hootsuite Standard covers up to 10 social accounts; Professional (from $199 per user/mo billed annually) is unlimited. 14-day trial; no $0 plan.

Worked example: what each costs a small team

A two-person team posting to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and X (5 accounts), monthly list prices for the entry tier that fits:

ToolPlan that fitsApproximate monthly cost
BufferTeam, 5 channels at $10$50
SocialBeeBootstrap is 1 user, so Pro for 3 users$99
Sprout SocialEssentials, 2 seats at $99 monthly$198
HootsuiteStandard, 2 users at $99 billed annually$198 (annual commitment)

Per-channel pricing wins for small teams with a few accounts. Per-seat pricing wins when many accounts are run by one or two people and you need the inbox and reporting.

Which scheduler fits which team

  • Solo creator or small business on a budget: Buffer or Metricool. Both have a $0 tier to start.
  • Instagram and TikTok-first brand: Later covers both plus Pinterest, Snapchat and YouTube, at a low entry price. Our Instagram scheduler guide covers the Instagram specifics.
  • Many profiles, one person: SocialBee's Pro plan covers 25 profiles for $99/mo, and Metricool prices by brand rather than seat.
  • Agency or in-house team needing inbox, approvals and reporting: Sprout Social or Hootsuite. They cost more because they do more, and for a team that needs a shared inbox and listening they are the better fit.
  • Facebook and Instagram only: Meta Business Suite, Meta's own tool, lets you create or schedule posts, stories and ads.

Set up a scheduling workflow in one afternoon

  1. Connect business accounts. Schedulers publish through each network's official API, which usually requires a business or creator account. Instagram's publishing API, for example, works with Instagram professional accounts.
  2. Pick posting slots. Start with fixed slots per network, such as LinkedIn Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Instagram daily at lunch, then move them after four weeks of data.
  3. Set content pillars. Three to five recurring themes, such as product tips, customer stories, behind the scenes and offers. Rotate them so the calendar never stalls on "what do we post today".
  4. Batch the writing. Write two weeks of posts in one session. Adapt each post per network instead of pasting the same caption everywhere: LinkedIn rewards a first-line hook, TikTok and YouTube Shorts are video-first.
  5. Add an approval step if anyone else signs off, before posts land in the queue.
  6. Review monthly. Keep the formats that earned saves, shares and clicks; cut the rest.

The part schedulers don't do

Scheduling is the last ten minutes of the work. The hours go into deciding what to post, writing it for each network, and keeping the calendar full.

Most schedulers now include an AI writing assistant inside the composer: Buffer's AI Assistant, Hootsuite's OwlyWriter AI. These help you draft a caption once you have an idea. They do not build the plan or keep it running week to week. A content calendar template helps; try our social media calendar generator.

Sprites Social Studio

Sprites Social Studio is the organic social part of Sprites' proprietary marketing agent. It covers the work before the scheduler:

  • Generates post ideas from your business and goals.
  • Builds a content plan.
  • Writes each post for its network.
  • Attaches media.
  • Schedules and publishes to X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.

You review and edit each post before it goes out. It does not publish to Facebook Pages or Pinterest, and it has no social inbox or listening, so if those are core to your workflow a scheduler such as Sprout Social or Buffer is the better fit for that part. The difference from an AI caption tool is scope: Social Studio plans the calendar and fills it. More in our guide to the AI social media manager.

Sprites also runs paid ads, SEO and Google Business Profile from the same workspace. Plans are on the pricing page, with a 7-day trial for $1.

List your networks and your team size, then price the two tools that fit both. That takes ten minutes and settles most of the decision.
