How Claude picks clips
From Sprites' own retention data: open on a first-person line with a stake, finish a thought by 4 seconds, about 20 words in the first 6, no filler in the first 10.
A clip that opened on "how one ad mistake cost us $12K" held 62% of viewers at 30 seconds. Clips that opened on a reference the viewer did not have averaged 18 to 22 seconds watched. Those rules go in the prompt, so every clip Claude picks is held to them. The full workflow is on podcast to shorts.
Riverside Magic Clips
Magic Clips is included on every Riverside plan, free included. Use it if you record on Riverside and want quick drafts; use Claude when you want every clip held to your own rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Opus Clip alternative for turning podcasts into shorts?
If you want control, Claude Code: it picks moments from your transcript by rules you write, then cuts, reframes and captions them with ffmpeg. If you want drafts with no setup, Riverside Magic Clips (free on every Riverside plan), Vizard or Submagic.
How much does Opus Clip cost?
Starter is $15 a month and Pro $29 a month, with a free plan and a custom Business plan. The page does not say whether those are billed monthly or annually. From the OpusClip pricing page, checked October 2, 2026.
Is there a free Opus Clip alternative?
Claude Code with ffmpeg and a local Whisper model: the tools are free and open source and nothing is watermarked. You pay for your Claude plan.
Are Riverside Magic Clips good?
Good for fast drafts from a Riverside recording. Like every clipper, it picks by its own model, so check each opening: the clip should start on a first-person line with a stake, not mid-thought.
Opus Clip vs Vizard vs Submagic: which is better?
Opus Clip for clipping with a virality score, Vizard for the cheapest annual plan ($14.50 a month on Creator), Submagic for animated captions. All three score moments with their own model; Claude Code works from your rules.
