Claude for video editing,end to end

Claude edits video through Claude Code, not the chat app: it runs ffmpeg and Whisper on your own files and cuts from the transcript. Fillers, clips, captions, 9:16 reframes, -14 LUFS audio and thumbnails, each checked before you see it.

  • filler from a primed transcript
  • restatement, cut in the energy valley
  • pause over 0.4 s, trimmed to 0.2 s

What you need

  • Claude Code in a terminal, pointed at a folder with your footage.
  • ffmpeg and ffprobe on your PATH.
  • A local Whisper model for word-level transcripts.
  • Python with numpy, soundfile and OpenCV for the checks.

Can Claude edit videos?

Yes, through Claude Code. The Claude chat app takes documents and images, not video files. Claude Code runs in your terminal, where it can call ffmpeg, Whisper and Python on the footage itself.

Claude does not watch the video the way an editor does. It reads what can be measured: a word-level transcript, loudness, silence, face positions, frame counts. Then it writes the edit as commands and checks the result the same way. That is why it is good at the passes editors repeat on every episode, and why you still look at the output.

The workflow, end to end

Transcribe primed, tighten, place edges, clean the audio, pace, reframe and caption behind a QA gate, make thumbnails, then run the checks on the delivered file.

This is how Sprites cuts its own podcast and talking-head footage with Claude, simplified. Each step has its own page with the prompt and the commands.

  1. Transcribe, primed for fillers

    Whisper with word timestamps and a prompt full of "um, uh, like", so the disfluencies are written down. A plain transcript hides them.

  2. Tighten

    Fillers, stutters, restatements and pauses over 0.4 s come out. Never change meaning. See remove filler words and remove silence.

  3. Place the cut points

    Transcript word ends run 100 to 300 ms early. Cut points come from phoneme-level forced alignment and a spectrogram, in real energy valleys. Audio edges stay exact; the picture snaps to frames.

  4. Clean the audio

    High-pass, soft expander, automix, breath reduction, denoise, EQ, 3:1 compression, de-esser, limiter. -14 LUFS, true peak under -1 dBTP. See audio cleanup.

  5. Pace each speaker

    Shorts go toward about 185 words a minute per speaker, capped so nobody sounds rushed, pitch preserved. Picture sped by the same factor.

  6. Reframe and caption behind a gate

    Face centred per shot, captions with shrink-to-fit fonts, and every card built and pixel-checked before the render is allowed to start. See reframe to 9:16 and auto captions.

  7. Thumbnails

    16:9, 9:16 and the two LinkedIn crops from one layout. See thumbnails.

  8. Run the QA gauntlet

    Transcribe the final file primed and count fillers, scan every join for repeated audio, check lip sync in 2 s windows, re-measure loudness on the mp4, and look at a contact sheet end to end.

Pull a 16 kHz mono track for transcription. The original file is never touched.
ffmpeg -i episode.mp4 -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 work/episode_16k.wav
Word-level transcript, primed so the fillers survive.
import whisper, json
model = whisper.load_model("turbo")
r = model.transcribe("work/episode_16k.wav", word_timestamps=True,
                     condition_on_previous_text=False,
                     initial_prompt="Umm, so, uh, I was like, uhh, you know, hmm... Um, yeah. Uh, we, um, like, uhm, basically, uh, okay.")
json.dump(r, open("work/words.json", "w"))
Re-measure on the encoded mp4, not the wav you mixed: integrated -14 LUFS, true peak under -1 dBTP.
ffmpeg -i out/clip.mp4 -af ebur128=peak=true -f null - 2>&1 | grep -A12 Summary
One frame every two seconds on a single sheet, so Claude and you can look at the whole edit.
ffmpeg -i out/clip.mp4 -vf "fps=1/2,scale=320:-1,tile=6x5" -frames:v 1 qa/sheet.png

Four rules that make it work

Claude is only as good as its checks. These four came from cuts that were rejected and had to be redone.

  1. Look at the output. A render that finished without an error is not proof the picture is right. Stills and contact sheets, every time.
  2. Silence is not success. Check exit codes. A check that crashes prints nothing, and nothing looks like a pass.
  3. Measure, do not model. Head tops, lip sync and loudness are measured off the picture and the encoded file, not estimated.
  4. Originals are read-only. Everything new goes to a separate folder. Nothing overwrites the camera files.

Do you need an MCP server to edit video with Claude?

No. Claude Code runs ffmpeg and Whisper directly. Connectors exist for people who want Claude to drive an editing app instead: Descript ships an official one, and Opus Clip lists one on its Pro plan.

A connector moves the edit into the vendor's app and onto its plan and credits. Running ffmpeg yourself keeps the files, the rules and the checks on your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude edit videos?

Yes, through Claude Code. It runs ffmpeg and Whisper on your files to remove fillers and pauses, cut clips, write captions, reframe to 9:16, clean audio to -14 LUFS and make thumbnails. The Claude chat app does not accept video uploads.

How do I use Claude Code for video editing?

Install ffmpeg and a local Whisper model, open Claude Code in a folder with your footage, tell it the originals are read-only, and ask for one job at a time: a primed transcript, a tightening pass, captions, a 9:16 reframe. Have it show you stills before any video render.

Can I use Claude to edit my podcast instead of Descript?

Yes. Claude Code removes fillers and long pauses, cleans the dialogue to -14 LUFS, writes captions and cuts clips. You give up Descript's visual editor, Eye Contact and voice cloning.

Is there an MCP server that lets Claude edit video?

Descript ships an official connector for Claude, and Opus Clip lists one on its Pro plan. You do not need one: Claude Code calls ffmpeg and Whisper directly.

Can AI agents like Claude Code replace a video editor?

For the passes an editor repeats on every episode, yes: fillers, pauses, captions, reframes, loudness, versions. For taste, story and colour, no. Use Claude for the repeat work and a person for the judgment.

How do I auto-caption and reframe a video to 9:16 with AI?

Measure the face in each shot and crop a 9:16 window around it with ffmpeg, then transcribe the reframed file with word timestamps and burn the captions in. Claude Code runs both and checks no head or caption is cut off.

How can I use Whisper transcription to edit video by editing the transcript?

Transcribe with word timestamps, mark the words to remove, and turn the words you keep into a list of time ranges. Claude Code writes that list and renders it with ffmpeg trim and concat.

What is text-based video editing?

Editing a video by editing its transcript: delete a word in the text and it is cut from the video. Descript and Premiere Pro do it in their editors; Claude Code does it with word timestamps and ffmpeg.

What is the best workflow to turn a 1-hour podcast into 10 short clips?

Transcribe the whole episode, have Claude list 10 moments of 40 to 65 seconds that open on a first-person line with a stake, approve the picks, then tighten, pace, reframe to 9:16, caption and thumbnail each one.
