How to get cited by ChatGPT
ChatGPT cites pages it can fetch that answer the question in a sentence it can stand behind. You get cited by publishing that page, being specific, and checking the answer. You do not get cited by adding the words “as an AI language model” to your blog.

Citation versus mention
About 101 US searches a month are for how to get cited by ChatGPT, and 101 for how to rank in ChatGPT. Ranking, here, means showing up in the answer. A mention is your brand in a list. A citation is your URL as the reason. Optimize for the second, and treat the first as a side effect.
The broader practice is answer engine optimization. Perplexity is a different product with a more visible source list, on how to rank in Perplexity.
What the page has to contain
One question. A direct answer. The evidence under it. Updated when the fact changes, with a date a reader can see. A page that answers twelve questions answers none of them cleanly enough to lift.
A companion file some teams add is llms.txt. Publish the page first. The file does not rescue a vague one.
Check, then change the page
Ask the question in a fresh chat. Note whether you appear, whether a competitor’s page is the citation, and whether the answer is wrong. If it is wrong, your page either was not found or was not clearer than whoever was.
Doing that across a prompt list every week is what AEO tools sell. Doing it once is the AEO grader.
Questions
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
Not as a citation in the organic answer. Ads inside ChatGPT, where they exist, are a separate product and a separate label. Buying an ad does not make you the source of the paragraph.
Does schema markup get me cited?
Schema helps machines read a page. It does not substitute for a sentence that answers the question. Add it when the page is already clear, not instead.
How long until a new page is cited?
There is no clock you can quote. Fetchable, specific pages show up sooner than orphan pages. Check, and if you are absent after the page has been indexable for a while, rewrite the answer, do not republish the same fog.
