Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your brand into the answer when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for a recommendation. The grade is a report card for that work. It is built from five dimensions, each read directly from what the engines said about you on this run, so every point in it can be traced back to an answer.
Brand awareness35%How well the engines know the brand, averaged across the ones that answeredSource credibility20%How much the engines trust what they have read about youEngine coverage15%How many of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity know you at allSentiment15%Whether the description is favourable when you are mentionedShare of the shortlist15%Your awareness against the strongest rival the engines named
Awareness carries the most weight because nothing else matters if the engines do not know you. Credibility comes next: an engine that is unsure of its sources hedges, and a hedged mention rarely makes the shortlist. Coverage, sentiment and the shortlist share decide whether a known brand is actually recommended.
An F or a D almost always means the engines have little third-party text about the brand. More copy on your own homepage will not fix that. What fixes it is one answer-first page per buyer question, clear entity signals (one canonical name, an About page, Organization schema, an llms.txt) and mentions on the review and comparison sites the engines already read.
A C means you are known but not recommended. The gap is usually the comparison prompt, “X vs Y” or “best tools for Z”, where a rival has a page built for the question and you do not. A B or an A means the work has shifted from getting in to staying in: the follow-up prompt, where the buyer adds a constraint such as price, an integration or compliance, is where a rival takes the slot.
Answer engines update their retrieval constantly, so a grade computed from last quarter’s training data can describe a brand that no longer exists. Every grade here is a fresh query against ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, dated to the day it ran. Because the answers are non-deterministic, two runs can differ by a few points; treat one grade as a snapshot and the trend as the signal.
Most AEO tools stop at the report. A roundup of the best AEO tools splits them into graders, trackers and tools that fix: Peec AI and Otterly track, Profound tracks and publishes on sales-led enterprise contracts, and Sprites tracks and then writes, publishes and re-measures the pages that close the gap, under your approval. If you are weighing trackers, the Peec AI alternatives and Profound alternatives pages compare them on price and on what happens after the dashboard.
The grade is the free front door. To track your AI visibility over time, Sprites repeats your buyer prompts across every answer engine on a schedule and turns each lost citation into a rewritten page, inside the same agent that runs your SEO and paid ads. The AI visibility hub explains what the category means, and the free AI visibility checker gives the same run as a single 0–100 score.
