Yes. ChatGPT has shown ads since February 9, 2026, but only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts never see them, and Free users can now switch ads off with the Ads-Free option. Ads sit below the end of a response, labeled Sponsored, and OpenAI says they do not change the answer above them. Marketers looking at the other side of the card should start with the complete guide to ChatGPT ads.

What changed this month
- August 18: ads expand to 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria (OpenAI).
- August 27: ads launch in India on Free and Go, with a ₹725 minimum daily budget for advertisers (TechCrunch).
- August 31: OpenAI reports a $1B annualized ad revenue run rate in under 200 days, 1B+ weekly active users on the ad-supported tier and 40+ countries, plus a $500 credit for new advertisers who spend $500 (OpenAI).
- September 10: OpenAI's Ad Policies are updated; trade press reports the refresh restricts ads for competing image and audio generation services.
Does ChatGPT have ads?
Yes, on the Free and Go plans, in supported countries, for logged-in adults. OpenAI announced the program on January 16, 2026 (Our approach to advertising) and began the US test on February 9, 2026 (Testing ads in ChatGPT). By August 31 the ad-supported tier had passed 1B weekly active users and the ads business a $1B annualized run rate, per OpenAI, so this is no longer a test.

Are ads coming to ChatGPT?
They already arrived. If you searched whether ads are coming to ChatGPT, or will ChatGPT have ads, the answer since February 9, 2026 is that ChatGPT has ads now, in more than 40 countries. What is still true is that more ChatGPT ads are coming: 2026 has added a format or a market almost every month, from the product feed in July to Europe in August. What ChatGPT ads 2026 looks like in practice has not moved: sponsored cards under the answer, labelled, and absent from every paid plan.
When did ChatGPT get ads?
ChatGPT got ads on February 9, 2026, in the United States, after the January 16 announcement that also took ChatGPT Go global at $8 a month. Every later market launched between March 26 and August 27, 2026; the dated list is in the countries section below.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Logged-in adults on the Free plan and on Go, the $8 a month plan, in a country where ads have launched. Everyone else is excluded by plan, age or surface, per OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help article:
| Plan or context | Sees ads? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes | Unless you pick the Ads-Free option (see below) |
| Go ($8 a month) | Yes | Same ad experience as Free |
| Plus | Never | Ad-free |
| Pro | Never | Ad-free |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | Never | Ad-free |
| Under-18 accounts | Never | Based on stated age and age prediction where available |
| Temporary Chats | Never | On any plan |
| ChatGPT Atlas browser | Never | No ads in Atlas |
| Free or Go in the EEA or Switzerland | Yes | Personalized ads not available; ads match the current chat only |
What do the ads look like?
A single card under the end of a response: advertiser name, favicon, a title, one line of copy, an image and a landing page link, labeled Sponsored or Ad and visually separated from the answer. No video, no sidebar, no sponsored answer. Since August 2026 retailers can also run product carousels, several products from one store (Digiday, press-reported).

Real ads match the mock. In an r/ChatGPT thread from April 2026 with about 1,600 upvotes, a Free user who had recently cancelled Plus posted their first ad: a "Shop · Sponsored" row under an answer about chess, with two product cards, a magnetic travel set from Chess'n'Boards and a titanium set from CountyComm, and the disclaimer underneath (thread). The poster then asked ChatGPT about the ad in the same chat, and ChatGPT replied that anything labeled Sponsored is placed by the platform, not generated by the model. That is the "ask ChatGPT about an ad" behavior today: the model explains the ad but does not sell it. OpenAI's January mock also showed a "Chat with" the advertiser button under a sponsored card; no such unit is documented as shipped. More captured examples are in the ChatGPT ads library.
Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?
No. Plus is ad-free, as are Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. OpenAI put it in writing on January 16, 2026: "ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise will remain ad-free," and its fourth ads principle commits to always offering a way to not see ads, including a paid tier that is ad-free. Marketers on r/PPC call that a built-in ad blocker for the highest-value users (thread).
How do I turn off ads in ChatGPT?
On the Free plan, choose the Ads-Free option in Settings: no ads, in exchange for lower message limits and fewer tools. OpenAI's help center names image generation and deep research as the tools that go. Upgrading to Plus or Pro removes ads without those limits.
- Open Settings, then Ads controls.
- Choose Change plan.
- Pick Reduce message limits. This is the Ads-Free option.
- Confirm the lower message limit. Ads stop; your daily message limit drops and image generation and deep research are no longer available.
To keep the full Free plan but stop ads from using your history, turn personalization off instead:
- Open Settings, then Ads controls.
- Switch Personalize ads off, and Past chats and memory off if you want no history used at all.
- Tap Delete ads data to clear your ads history and interests. OpenAI retains that data for up to 30 days before removing it from its servers; your chats are not affected.
- Use the menu on any ad to dismiss it or see why it was shown.

Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?
No, according to OpenAI. The February 9 wording: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what's most helpful to you." The help center adds that the ad system operates independently of the chat model, that ads are not eligible near health, mental health or politics, and that political ads are banned outright. The line under each ad, "Ads do not influence the answers you get from ChatGPT. Your chats stay private.", is the same promise inside the product.
Does ChatGPT use my chats to target ads?
Yes, the current chat always, and past chats only if personalization is on. OpenAI's help center lists the signals:
- Always used: the context of the current chat thread, your general location and your language.
- Used only with personalization on: your past chats, memory, and your ad interaction history (ads you viewed, hid or engaged with).
- Never used: your precise location, IP address, name, email, or sensitive topics.
Advertisers never see any of this. They receive aggregated, non-identifying data such as total views and clicks, and OpenAI says it never sells user data to advertisers. Ad interactions do not create memories. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, personalized ads are not available, so ads there use the current chat only.

Which countries have ChatGPT ads?
More than 40 countries as of August 31, 2026, per OpenAI, launched in five waves: the United States (February 9), Canada, Australia and New Zealand (March 26), the United Kingdom (June 6) with Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea confirmed August 11, 31 European countries (August 18), and India (August 27). In the EEA and Switzerland the ads run without personalization.
The advertiser map is wider. Self-serve Ads Manager is open to businesses in more than 50 countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, India, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, according to OpenAI's availability list; the ChatGPT ads guide keeps that table.
Will ads come to Plus or the Atlas browser?
Nothing announced, and OpenAI's written commitments point the other way. The January 16 post says Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise will remain ad-free. The ChatGPT Atlas browser and Temporary Chats are listed in the help center as surfaces where ads do not appear. The one thing left open is the EEA personalization exception, which the help center calls "not initially available" rather than permanent.
What is next for ChatGPT ads?
Scale and format work at OpenAI, and a split across the rest of the industry. OpenAI's updates point to more self-serve countries (Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa opened in late August), product carousels, an exclusion targeting test that lets advertisers name contexts they do not want to appear next to (Adweek, August 26), and the $500 credit for new advertisers.
Elsewhere the picture is mixed. Perplexity killed its ads business in February 2026, arguing that ads make users suspicious of every answer (Campaign US). Google serves ads in AI Overviews, but there are no ads in the Gemini app: Google's ads VP said in December 2025 there were no current plans (reported by LeapBuzz). Anthropic's Claude is ad-free by policy and made that the point of its Super Bowl campaign, which won the Cannes Lions Film Grand Prix (Adweek). For a Free ChatGPT user: ads are here, they are small and labeled, and the switch to turn them off is one screen away.
For marketers. If you want to be the card under the answer: the complete guide to ChatGPT ads covers formats and cost, the setup post walks through a first campaign, the Ads Manager walkthrough covers the account, and the ChatGPT ads library shows real ads. Sprites runs the campaign, measures it, and optimizes it across ChatGPT, Google and Meta from one place: get started or book a demo.
