First impressions of Ads Manager
The most-upvoted practitioner thread is a setup walkthrough. I got into the ChatGPT Ads Manager beta: first campaign setup walkthrough (r/PPC, May 21, 2026, 100 points, 66 comments) by u/Ray_Dev_SG reports about 15 days from application to approval, then documents the UI: Reach, Clicks and Conversions objectives, with Conversions marked coming soon; targeting capped to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; a web-only data source; and a context-hints box that is plain free text with no suggestions. No CTA picker, A/B tooling or frequency cap was found. Our OpenAI Ads Manager walkthrough shows today's screens.
Three weeks of agency use gave a calmer verdict. Thoughts on ChatGPT Ads 3+ Weeks In (r/PPC, June 24, 2026, 39 points, 59 comments) by u/TheADLeaf calls the platform "bare" but standard: a contextual text block instead of demographic targeting, no video, tracking through UTMs, and lifetime budgets that paced poorly while daily budgets behaved.
Access was its own theme: ChatGpt ads should have gone live for Europe yesterday (r/PPC, August 25, 2026, 12 points, 8 comments) by u/lool270 found Ads Manager "not available for my country" the day after the European launch.
What CTRs and CPCs people are seeing
The clearest numbers come from small tests. ChatGPT Ads beta: early CTR: 0% / 1.15% / 2.4% (r/PPC, May 15, 2026, 76 points, 91 comments) by u/g_hock reports 228 impressions across three ad groups, spread wildly unevenly: 16 to one group, 125 to another. The winning angle hit 2.4% CTR, which the author puts at two to three times Google Display and well below Search. No conversions yet.
Early CPCs sat under $6. My Experience with Chat GPT Ads (r/PPC, May 2026 approx., 7 points, 34 comments) by u/Single-Sea-7804, an agency lead-gen account, saw CPCs under $6 and rising, one conversion from France on US-only targeting, and spend that then stalled. In How's ChatGPT ads going for advertisers? (r/PPC, June 2026 approx., 23 points, 44 comments), Australian in-house marketer u/potatodrinker relays an agency trial at a $5K USD minimum and a $50 USD CPM, against roughly $15 for a normal Australian buy.
The most recent data point is negative. Anybody positive experience with ChatGPT ads? (r/PPC, September 5, 2026, 7 points, 18 comments) by u/code_x_7777 moved budget from Meta, ran a few hundred ads, and found cost per conversion significantly higher. Niches that worked and did not ($34K test)
The largest disclosed spend is My thoughts on ChatGPT Ads (r/PPC, July 2026 approx., 30 points, 27 comments) by u/Fractionalcmoz: about $34K across client niches. Worked: home services, car rental, international real estate, personal injury and DWI law. Did not: criminal defense, tours, employment law, a SaaS startup, dental. Performance came in pulses, about three days on and one or two off, and the top ChatGPT queries were fed back into Google Ads and AEO content. The three-weeks thread agrees on funnel position: conversions arrived mid to bottom funnel at a better cost than Google, and landing pages with a chatbot converted better.
Few people report anything at all. Is anyone actually seeing meaningful results from ChatGPT Ads yet? (r/PPC, July 2026 approx., 25 points, 58 comments) by u/crimsonparkdigital concludes it "still feels pretty experimental". Anyone that have had success with ChatGPT ads? (r/PPC, August 2026 approx., 10 points, 44 comments) would "rarely hear anybody talk about them" and asks for ROAS proof. Nobody posts one.
Context hints: the mistake everyone makes
Context hints are the only targeting lever, and the common mistake is writing a brief instead of phrases. 1 Week Running ChatGPT Ads: 2 Early Learnings (r/PPC, July 2026 approx., 14 points, 7 comments) by u/Any_Bee_413 started with about 1,000 words of hints and got almost no delivery. Cutting to a few hundred words and dropping the age and gender descriptions took the campaign to its full $25 daily spend. The second learning is creative: headshots and personal photos ran at about 5% CTR, logos at about 0.5%.
The walkthrough explains why people over-write: the field is a free-text box with no suggestions and no feedback. The uneven impression split in the early CTR thread is the same black box seen from reporting. OpenAI's docs describe hints as descriptive phrases, not exact-match rules ("cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners" over "running shoes"). The ChatGPT ads library shows which prompts real ads answer, which beats guessing. The $34K thread's before-during-after framing is the recipe: one ad group per stage, phrased the way a person asks.
Tracking and attribution headaches (oppref, direct traffic)
ChatGPT ads are here, but can we measure their performance? (r/PPC, May 26, 2026, 37 points, 57 comments) is the attribution thread: demo requests came in, and analytics filed them as direct traffic.
The technical answer is I integrated OpenAI's Ads Conversions API for e-commerce (r/PPC, August 2026 approx., 25 points, 29 comments) by u/ksz2018. The click ID is an oppref URL parameter; the oaiq pixel stores it in a first-party __oppref cookie, and a server-side integration has to persist it itself (no published expiry; the author used about 90 days). Event names are fixed, amounts are in minor units (4999 means $49.99), deduplication uses a shared event id, and there is a validate-only dry run.
Demand for that help is visible: ChatGPT ads (local service business) (r/PPC, July 2026 approx., 8 points, 16 comments) asks for setup and conversion-tracking help and is "willing to pay". The setup guide covers the pixel and the click window.
The audience-quality debate (paid tiers are ad-free)
The sharpest recent critique is ChatGPT Ads are missing the exact buyers Google reaches (r/PPC, September 7, 2026, 70 points, 53 comments) by u/Leads-Generation. Plus and Pro subscribers, who skew higher income, never see ads; the pool is Free and Go users the author calls price-sensitive. OpenAI has "handed its highest-value users a built-in ad blocker". Replies split between people who see it in their lead quality and people who point out that Free is where the volume is.
The optimists were loudest before launch. ChatGPT ads are (almost) here (r/PPC, January 19, 2026, 96 points, 57 comments) by u/otso-karvinen, a 15-year PPC veteran, saw "potential to be as big as Google Ads". The $34K results are the tiebreaker: home services and injury law are bought on any plan; enterprise SaaS is not.
What users on r/ChatGPT think
Almost all the user-side heat came before anyone had seen an ad. OpenAI isn't making money...but come on (r/ChatGPT, December 2025 approx., 5,039 points, 246 comments) circulated a mock ad screenshot and the fear that chat logs would drive targeting. OpenAI head of ChatGPT confirms NOT doing live tests; screenshots were fake (r/ChatGPT, December 2025 approx., 1,143 points, 196 comments) is Nick Turley's correction. Anthropic is airing this ad mocking ChatGPT ads during the Super Bowl (r/ChatGPT, February 2026 approx., 1,641 points, 162 comments) set the tone at launch.
Then people saw one. ADS ON CHATGPT ARE HERE. (r/ChatGPT, April 2026 approx., 1,560 points, 274 comments) is a Free-plan user who had cancelled Plus and got a first ad under a chess question. The card was small, labeled and below the answer, and the comments are more curious than angry. The objection moved from "ads will ruin it" to "ads are ignorable". The format is unobtrusive by design; the real examples in the ChatGPT ads library look plain.
Consensus: is it worth testing?
Yes, with a small daily budget and a conversion event wired before the first dollar. Nobody calls it a Google replacement, and nobody who ran a real test calls it worthless. Those who got conversions had research-stage or high-intent local offers, short hints and a pixel; those who got nothing had long hints, lifetime budgets or B2B SaaS.
Consensus playbook
- Keep context hints short. A few hundred words of specific phrases delivered; a thousand-word brief did not (u/Any_Bee_413).
- Use a face, not a logo. About 5% CTR against about 0.5% (u/Any_Bee_413).
- Daily budgets, not lifetime. Lifetime pacing was poor; daily behaved (u/TheADLeaf).
- Install the pixel and persist oppref. Otherwise conversions land in direct traffic (u/ksz2018, the measurement thread).
- Sell research-stage and high-intent local offers. Home services, car rental, real estate and injury law worked; SaaS and dental did not (u/Fractionalcmoz).
- Write hints for before, during and after the need. One ad group per stage (u/Fractionalcmoz).
- Judge on weeks, not days. Delivery comes in pulses (u/Fractionalcmoz).
What OpenAI has fixed since
Each dated complaint above, mapped to the update that answered it and who published the date.
| Complaint (thread) | What changed | When |
|---|---|---|
| Conversions objective coming soon (walkthrough) | Conversions API and pixel; Conversions objective (oCPC, oCPM), oCPC beta for product feeds | May 5 and Aug 7, 2026 (OpenAI; Search Engine Roundtable) |
| Targeting capped to US, CA, AU, NZ (walkthrough); Europe unavailable (u/lool270) | UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea; 31 European countries; India; self-service in Europe, India, Middle East, North Africa | Aug 11, 18, 27 and 31, 2026 (OpenAI) |
| Conversions filed as direct traffic (measurement thread) | oppref click ID and cookie; URL macros; pixel diagnostics; Automatic Advanced Matching default, then mandatory | May 5 (OpenAI); Aug 7 and 17, 2026 (Search Engine Roundtable) |
| No audience controls (u/TheADLeaf) | Custom audiences (25,000 matched minimum, 0.1x to 10x multipliers, exclusions with no minimum); excluded locations; exclusion targeting in limited test | Help Center, 2026; Aug 26, 2026 (Adweek) |
| Lifetime budget paced poorly (u/TheADLeaf) | Documented, not changed: daily budget is a seven-day rolling average with 2x daily and 7x weekly caps | Help Center, 2026 |
| No product ads, CTA picker or video (walkthrough; u/TheADLeaf) | Product feeds (CSV, hosted URL or SFTP) and carousels; a dynamic CTA format is press-reported in test. Still no video; Sora is reported discontinued | Aug 6 and May 21, 2026 (Digiday); Ad Age, single source |
Still missing: keywords, demographics, dayparting, frequency caps and prompt-level reporting. The hints box is still free text.
If you test, run it the way the threads that got results did: a small daily budget, a pixel from day one, and the same conversion event reported next to your Google and Meta numbers. Sprites runs it, measures it and optimizes it across ChatGPT, Google and Meta from one place. Start with a self-serve account or book a demo.
