Product seeding vs influencer gifting
Seeding sends product with no strings and no guarantee of a post. Gifting sends product with an ask: a post, a story or a video, sometimes in exchange for the product alone. Paid collaborations add a fee and a contract.
| Product seeding | Influencer gifting | Paid collaboration | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obligation to post | None | Soft ask, product as payment | Contracted |
| Cost per creator | Product and shipping | Product and shipping | Fee, product and shipping |
| Control over content | None | Light | Brief and review |
| Usage in ads | Only if you ask later | Only if agreed | Agreed up front |
| Hit rate | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
What product seeding really costs
The box is cheap. The cost per post is not: product, packaging, shipping and time, divided by the creators who actually posted. Work it out before you scale it.
Cost per post = (product cost + packaging + shipping + your time) × creators seeded ÷ creators who posted. If half the box cost goes to people who never post, your real cost per post doubles. Seeding to people who already said yes is the single biggest lever.
Compare that number with a paid UGC video. Marketplaces list UGC videos from about $25 to $100 and up, with usage rights included on several of them. See video ad pricing and paying influencers.

The ads, without the creator ops.
At scale: Seeding 10 creators is a fun afternoon. Seeding 50 a month is addresses in DMs, sizes in a spreadsheet, a 3PL ticket for every lost box, and a follow-up thread for each one. Around 20 minutes per creator per month, before a single video exists.
Director is a full creative team for your startup. Every Monday you get finished, on-brand video ads, reviewed by a human. You pick the winners. Sprites ships the campaigns. No creators to manage.
- Strategy, hooks, scripts, shooting and editing, end to end.
- Every video is checked by a person before it reaches your inbox.
- You never write a prompt. No endless revisions.
How to run a product seeding campaign
Build a list, ask before you ship, collect address and size in one form, ship with a short note, follow up once, and log every post against the package.
- Build the list. Customers who tag you, creators in your niche, people who review competitors. Micro influencer finder helps.
- Ask first. "Can we send you one, no strings?" An opt-in list posts far more than a cold one, and it stops boxes going to people who moved.
- One form. Address, size or shade, handle, and whether they would consider a paid video later. Not five DMs.
- Ship with a note. Handwritten if you can. One line on why you picked them and the one thing you would love them to try.
- Follow up once. About a week after delivery. Ask what they thought, not whether they will post.
- Log every post. Handle, date, link, and whether you asked for usage rights. The ones that perform become paid creators.
From seeding to paid creators
Treat seeding as a casting call. The creators whose unpaid post is good are the ones to brief, pay and whitelist next.
When a seeded post outperforms, move fast: offer a paid brief, agree usage rights and whitelisting, and send the brief template. That is the moment seeding turns into creator management.
Questions
What is product seeding?
Product seeding is sending free product to influencers or creators with no obligation to post, in the hope that they like it and share it with their audience.
What is the difference between seeding and gifting?
Seeding has no strings attached. Gifting usually comes with an ask, such as a post or a story, with the product itself as the payment.
Does influencer seeding work?
It works best on an opt-in list of creators who already like the category. Cold seeding to strangers has a low hit rate and a high cost per post once you count the boxes that go nowhere.
How much does product seeding cost?
Product, packaging and shipping per box, plus the time to run it. The number that matters is cost per post: total spend divided by the creators who actually posted.
How many influencers should I seed?
Start with 20 to 50 on an opt-in list so you can follow up personally and log every post. Scale only once you know your cost per post.
Can I use seeded content in ads?
Only if the creator agrees. Ask for usage rights in writing, ideally before you ship, and pay for paid usage if you plan to run it as an ad.
