Three things sold as shoppable
They are priced similarly and convert very differently. Worth establishing which one you are being sold.
- 1
Tagged product, click out
The ad shows items with prices and sends the tap to a product page. Most "shoppable" inventory is this. It is a well-built product ad, not a new mechanism.
- 2
In-unit browsing, checkout off-platform
The viewer moves through a catalogue inside the ad and leaves only to pay. Meta’s Collection ads opening an Instant Experience are the clearest example.
- 3
Checkout in the unit
Payment completes without leaving. The rarest and the only version that genuinely changes the funnel, usually tied to a platform holding the payment credentials already.
Where it runs
The shoppable surfaces that are confirmed live, and the ones that are only reported.

- Amazon, on Prime Video
Interactive video ads on streaming, alongside dynamic TV creative and pause ads announced in May 2026. The strongest position in the category, because the payment details are already on file.Source: Amazon Ads, dynamic TV creative for Prime Video
- Roku
Action Ads prompt the viewer to press OK on the remote and receive a text. Interactive only on its own channel, standard video elsewhere, with extra capability for merchants on one ecommerce platform.Source: Roku self-serve help centre, action ads deep dive
- Samsung
A shoppable CTV experience and a product carousel, with interactive video from Amazon reported as arriving on its free channel service during 2026. Reported in trade coverage rather than confirmed on a Samsung page.Source: Trade coverage of the 2026 upfront announcements
- Streaming services generally
Interactive and shoppable formats on the other large streamers are announced more often than they are confirmed live. Treat any plan built on them as unproven.Source: Our own check of the platforms’ announcements, October 2026
Where the format struggles
Shoppable units work on impulse and fail on consideration, and most of the inventory is sold to advertisers selling the wrong thing.
The mechanism removes steps between wanting and buying. That is worth a lot on a low-price impulse product and almost nothing on a mattress, where the missing step was never the obstacle. Look at the DTC ads above: the durable goods among them need a landing page, reviews and a returns policy before anyone pays.
Attribution gets harder, not easier. A unit that completes checkout inside a platform reports the sale inside that platform, which is exactly where you least want to take conversion numbers on trust.
On television the constraint is the remote. Roku’s own format works around it by taking a phone number and texting the viewer, which tells you how much friction a ten-foot interface really has, and why interactive CTV is mostly a lead-capture mechanism dressed as commerce.
The version worth testing is the one where browsing is the interaction: a catalogue inside the unit for a brand with genuine range. That is a real improvement on a single product image, and it is buyable today rather than announced.
The advertisers this is sold to
Real ads from DTC brands at the scale shoppable inventory is pitched at. Note how many of them are demonstrating rather than listing.
VideoStanley“No spills, no sweat.”One product, one colourway, one price.
VideoJuly“The way luggage should've been”Luggage shot as a catalogue, ready to tag.
VideoNectar Sleep“🤩 Save up To 40% On Mattresses 🤩”A considered purchase, which is where shoppable units struggle.
VideoSolo Stove“All-New Summit Series”Demonstration first, product second. The shape a shoppable video wants.
VideoYeti“Unlock. Flip. Chug.”Durability shown rather than claimed.
The creative inside the unit
A shoppable unit is a frame. What fills it is product video, and it needs replacing constantly.

Questions
What is a shoppable ad?
An ad that carries the product inside the unit, with tagged items, prices and a path to buy. The useful question is whether checkout happens in the ad or it is a tagged link to a product page.
Which platforms have shoppable ads?
Meta through Collection ads opening an Instant Experience, Amazon on Prime Video, and Roku through Action Ads on its own channel. Samsung and the other streamers are mostly reported rather than confirmed.
Do shoppable ads work?
On impulse purchases, yes, because they remove steps between wanting and buying. On considered purchases the missing step was never the obstacle, so they tend to buy engagement rather than revenue.
How do shoppable ads work on connected TV?
Mostly by getting off the TV. Roku prompts the viewer to press OK and then texts them, which makes interactive CTV closer to lead capture than to commerce.
