How to Rank in ChatGPT: A ChatGPT SEO Playbook for 2026

The short answer

  • To rank in ChatGPT, your page has to be fetchable by OAI-SearchBot, findable in the search results ChatGPT pulls from (OpenAI says that includes Bing), and written so a passage answers the question in one or two sentences.
  • For brand and "best X" prompts, what other sites say about you matters as much as your own pages: reviews, roundups, comparison pages and community threads.
  • There is no rank number to check. Track a fixed list of prompts every month and watch referral traffic tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  • Paying does not change answers. ChatGPT ads are labeled, sit apart from the response, and OpenAI says they do not influence what ChatGPT says.

How ChatGPT decides what to show

ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learned in training, and live web search. ChatGPT SEO is mostly about the second one, because it is the part you can change this quarter.

When a prompt needs current information (prices, "best" lists, comparisons, recent news), ChatGPT runs a search. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT search may share de-identified search queries with Bing and other third-party search providers to return web results. It then reads a handful of pages, writes an answer and cites the sources it used.

OpenAI also states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that the requirement is not blocking OAI-SearchBot. There is no submission form and no paid inclusion.

That gives you four levers, in this order:

  1. Let OpenAI's search crawler in.
  2. Be indexed and ranking in the search results ChatGPT pulls from.
  3. Have a passage that answers the prompt better than the other pages retrieved.
  4. Be mentioned on the third-party pages ChatGPT also retrieves.

Step 1: Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs, and its crawler documentation is explicit about each:

User agentWhat OpenAI uses it forWhat to do
OAI-SearchBotSurfacing websites in ChatGPT's search featuresAllow it. OpenAI recommends allowing it to appear in search results.
GPTBotCrawling content that may be used to train generative AI modelsYour call. Disallowing it opts content out of training and does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
ChatGPT-UserVisits a user asked for inside ChatGPT or a custom GPTOpenAI notes robots.txt rules may not apply, because a person initiated the request.

A robots.txt that keeps you in search while opting out of training looks like this:

  • User-agent: OAI-SearchBot then Allow: /
  • User-agent: GPTBot then Disallow: /

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust. OpenAI's help center also says your host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published search crawler IP addresses, so check your firewall and bot protection rules. A Cloudflare or WAF rule that blocks "AI bots" can override a perfectly good robots.txt.

Step 2: Get indexed and ranking in Bing

Because ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers including Bing, a page Bing has never indexed starts at a disadvantage. Most teams have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools. Fix that first:

  1. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Submit your XML sitemap. Bing says it typically reads sitemaps about once a day.
  3. Turn on IndexNow, which Bing recommends for notifying it when URLs are published, updated or deleted. Many CMS platforms and CDNs have it built in.
  4. Check which of your money pages Bing actually indexed, and fix the ones it skipped.

Then do the classic work: titles that match the query, internal links to your comparison and pricing pages, and fast server-rendered pages. Ranking on page one in Bing for "best [category] for [audience]" is the most direct lever you control for showing up when someone asks ChatGPT the same thing.

Step 3: Write pages ChatGPT can quote

ChatGPT retrieves several pages and quotes the passage that answers best. Win the passage.

  • Answer in the first sentence under each heading. "Acme starts at $29 a month for 3 users" is quotable. "Let's look at Acme's pricing" is not.
  • Use the buyer's words in headings. If people ask "is Acme good for agencies", have an H2 that says that and answers it.
  • Put facts in tables. Plans, prices, limits and integrations in an HTML table get lifted cleanly into comparison answers.
  • Write self-contained FAQ answers. Each answer should name the product and make sense alone, because ChatGPT will quote it alone.
  • Publish comparison pages. "Acme vs Rival" and "Rival alternatives" pages match the prompts buyers type. Be fair and say where the rival fits better; balanced pages get cited.
  • Keep it current. A pricing table with last year's numbers gets passed over, or worse, quoted wrong.

The AEO grader scores a single page against these patterns, which is a fast way to find which existing pages need an answer-first rewrite. For the full on-page method across all assistants, see LLM SEO.

Step 4: Earn mentions on the pages ChatGPT reads

For "best X" prompts, ChatGPT often cites roundups, review sites and forum threads, not vendor sites. If you are absent from those, you are absent from the answer.

  1. Run your top 10 category prompts and list every third-party URL ChatGPT cites.
  2. Sort them by how often they appear. The top five are your outreach list.
  3. For roundups: ask to be reviewed, and send accurate pricing and a clear one-line description.
  4. For review sites: ask recent customers for reviews on the one or two sites that keep getting cited.
  5. For community threads: answer genuinely where your product is relevant, disclosed as yours. Spam gets removed and remembered.

Keep your one-line description identical everywhere. When a directory says one thing and your homepage another, ChatGPT picks whichever it trusts more.

Step 5: Measure with a prompt list

ChatGPT has no rank tracker and answers vary between runs, so measure a fixed set over time.

Prompt typeExampleHow many to track
Categorybest email marketing tool for Shopify stores10 to 20
ComparisonAcme vs Rival for a small team5 to 10
Brandis Acme worth it / Acme pricing3 to 5
Problemhow do I reduce cart abandonment emails going to spam5 to 10

For each prompt, log whether you were mentioned, whether your site was cited and which URL, and which competitors appeared. Run the list monthly, in a clean session, without changing the wording.

Pair it with traffic. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so ChatGPT shows up as its own source in Google Analytics. Rising referrals with flat mentions usually means your existing citations moved higher in answers.

Why a site never shows up in ChatGPT

When a brand is missing from every ChatGPT answer, the cause is usually one of five things. Check them in this order, because the first two are binary.

  1. The crawler is blocked. robots.txt disallows OAI-SearchBot, or a firewall rule blocks it. Nothing else matters until this is fixed.
  2. The page is not in the index. Bing never indexed it, often because it is new, thin, or only linked from a JavaScript menu.
  3. The answer is buried. The page covers the topic but the specific fact sits in paragraph six or inside an image.
  4. Nobody else mentions you. Category prompts lean on roundups and reviews, and you are on none of them.
  5. The facts are stale. Old prices on your site or a directory make ChatGPT either skip you or quote the wrong number.

Numbers one and two take an afternoon. Numbers three to five are the ongoing work.

The paid route: ChatGPT ads

If you need presence in ChatGPT before organic work pays off, there is now a paid channel. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026 and is rolling them out to eligible users on its entry-level plans in select regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads.

OpenAI states that ads appear below the response, are labeled as sponsored, and do not influence ChatGPT's answers. So ads buy a placement next to the answer, never a place in it. The two routes are complements. Our ChatGPT ads page covers formats and setup.

How Sprites helps

Sprites' AI visibility agent runs the prompts you choose in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and reports where your brand is mentioned and cited. It then writes content aimed at being cited (FAQ pages, comparison pages and llms.txt) and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify or Framer after you approve each change. It is included from the Launch plan at $495 a month, and every plan on the pricing page starts with a 7-day trial for $1.

Start today with the two checks that take ten minutes: confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt and your firewall, and confirm your top five pages are indexed in Bing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

To show up in ChatGPT search, allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt and in your firewall, make sure your pages are indexed in Bing, write sections that answer the question in the first sentence, and earn mentions on the review sites and roundups ChatGPT cites for your category. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search.

Does ChatGPT use Bing for search?

OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT search may share de-identified search queries with Bing and other third-party search providers to return web results. Being indexed and ranking in Bing therefore helps a page get retrieved for ChatGPT answers.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI models, while OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. You can disallow GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot to stay eligible for ChatGPT search results.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI states that ads in ChatGPT appear below the response, are labeled as sponsored and do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ranking inside the answer comes only from organic work such as crawler access, indexing, quotable content and third-party mentions.

How do I track my ChatGPT rankings?

ChatGPT has no rank positions, so track a fixed list of 25 to 45 buyer prompts monthly and record whether your brand is mentioned, which URL is cited and which competitors appear. Add referral traffic from ChatGPT, which OpenAI tags with utm_source=chatgpt.com, in your analytics.
