Why it happens
Too many facets combined
Too many facets combined
Each AND narrows the audience. Job title and seniority and industry and company size can take a million people to a few hundred.
A small matched list
A company or contact list only counts the members LinkedIn can match. A 500-row upload can match far fewer.
Narrow exclusions
Excluding customers, competitors and existing pipeline from an already narrow audience pushes it under the line.
Exact job titles
Titles are the narrowest facet LinkedIn has. A short list of exact titles misses most of the people doing that job.
How to fix it, step by step
Read the forecast
Edit the ad set and open the audience step. The forecast panel shows the audience size. Under 300 is a hard stop.
Swap titles for function and seniority
Replace a list of exact job titles with the job function plus seniority. Same buyer, many more members.
Drop the weakest facet
Remove one facet at a time, starting with the one you are least sure of, and recheck the forecast after each.
Widen the list
For account lists, add more companies or pair the list with a function or seniority facet instead of titles.
Turn on audience expansion
Audience expansion adds members similar to your targeting. Useful when the core audience is right but small.

Sprites fixes this
Or let Sprites fix it
Sprites reads the targeting on every ad set, shows which facets are doing the narrowing and proposes a wider set. You approve every change.
What Sprites does
- Lists every ad set with its status, so the ones stuck on audience size are in front of you at once.
- Reads each ad set’s full targeting with the facet names resolved: titles, functions, seniorities, industries, company sizes, lists and locations.
- Replaces the targeting with a wider set, for example function and seniority instead of exact titles.
- Shows impressions and spend by job title, seniority and company, so you keep the segments that convert.
What it doesn't do
- Read LinkedIn's audience size forecast
Questions
What is the minimum audience size for LinkedIn ads?
300 members. Below that the ad set shows Not delivering, audience too small.
What audience size should I aim for?
Tens of thousands for steady delivery on a normal budget. Small ABM lists can work, but expect higher costs and slower spend.
Why is my matched company list so small?
LinkedIn only counts companies and contacts it can match to member profiles. Clean names and add domains to improve the match.
Does audience expansion ruin targeting?
It adds similar members, so it dilutes a precise list. Use it when reach is the problem and the audience definition is right.
Job titles or job function?
Function plus seniority reaches far more of the right people. Exact titles miss everyone who words their title differently.
