The objective is the real constraint
Before asking whether a playable suits your product, check whether you can buy one. The networks answer that first, and the answer is narrower than most guides admit.
Google treats playables as an App campaign format and states they are not eligible for pre-registration campaigns. TikTok runs them under the app promotion objective inside its newer campaign experience. Meta limits them to the app install objective. The in-app networks exist to sell app installs in the first place.
So the format follows the objective, not the category. A fintech app, a shopping app or a language app can all buy playables on the same surfaces a game does. An ecommerce brand selling a product with no app has no objective to attach one to, whatever a vendor glossary says about playables for retail.
This is why the question "do playables work for non-games" is usually asked backwards. The useful version is whether your app has one action worth demonstrating in about five seconds, and whether the install is the thing you want next.
What a non-game app can actually demo
A playable rebuilds one interaction, not a product. These are the shapes that survive that compression.
A calculator or quote
Drag a slider, see a number. Finance, insurance and loan apps have the strongest non-game case because the interaction is the product and it fits in one screen.
A single lesson
Education and language apps can run one real exercise and let the viewer get it right. The format matches the product: a short correct answer with immediate feedback.
A customiser
Pick a colour, a room, a plan. Shopping apps with a configurator can demo the moment of choosing, which is more persuasive than a carousel of the same items.
A swipe or sort
Dating, news and productivity apps whose core loop is triage can hand the viewer three cards to deal with. One loop, no onboarding.
What does not fit
Anything whose value needs an account, a data set or more than one screen. Banking dashboards, CRMs and social feeds have nothing to hand a stranger in five seconds.
Every playable in the showcase is a game
Worth saying plainly, because it is the strongest available evidence about where the format is actually used. These are all the playables AppLovin publishes in its own creative showcase, and not one of them is a non-game app.

How to read that
A showcase is a marketing choice, not a census. It still tells you something, as long as you do not over-read it.
AppLovin picked these to sell its network to game studios, so games being over-represented is partly selection. But a showcase is also where a network would put its most impressive non-game playable if it had one, and there is none.
The honest conclusion is that playables outside games are real but rare, and the case studies that get cited for them are almost always vendor-published and hard to verify. We went looking for the widely repeated non-game playable results and could not trace them to a publisher, the same problem that affects playable ad benchmarks generally.
If you run a non-game app and the interaction fits, the sensible route is one playable against your best video on the same network, rather than a budget committed on someone else’s case study. The build cost is on what a playable ad costs.
If you have no app, the formats you actually want are elsewhere: interactive ads covers what a brand can buy, and shoppable ads covers the retail end of it.
Video ads for the app, done for you
Most non-game app accounts are carried by video, whether or not a playable joins it.

Questions
Can non-gaming apps use playable ads?
Yes, as app-install advertisers. Google, Meta and TikTok all gate playables to their app promotion or app install objectives, so any app can buy them on the same surfaces a game does.
Do playable ads work for ecommerce?
Only if you are advertising a shopping app. A brand selling a product with no app has no objective to attach a playable to on the networks that run them.
What kind of non-game app suits a playable?
One with a single interaction worth five seconds: a calculator, one lesson, a customiser or a swipe-and-sort loop. Anything needing an account or several screens does not compress.
Are there non-game playable ad examples?
Few that can be verified. Every playable in the AppLovin creative showcase is a game, and the non-game results that get quoted are mostly vendor-published without a traceable dataset.
