What compresses and what does not
The test is whether a stranger can see the goal in the first frame, before any instruction.
Works: aim and destroy
Brick breakers and physics puzzles show the goal in the layout itself. The blocks are there, the ball is there, and the first tap is obvious.
Works: find the thing
Hidden object scenes carry their own instruction. A playable can show the scene, highlight one target and let the viewer tap it, which is the whole loop.
Works: sort by colour
Sorting and nesting puzzles read as tidying, which needs no explanation at all and produces a visible finished state.
Does not work: rules first
Anything where the rule has to be stated before the first move. Word logic, number placement and constraint puzzles lose the viewer in the sentence explaining them.
How to build one
Puzzle playables fail on difficulty more than on art. The viewer is not trying to be challenged, they are deciding whether this game is for them.
Pick the level that flatters. Not level one, which is usually a tutorial, and not a real mid-game level, which is too hard. Build the one that looks like skill and plays like a guarantee.
Show the solved state early. Hidden object and sorting playables benefit from a half-finished board, because the gap between messy and tidy is the pitch.
Use the end card to raise the stakes rather than the difficulty. Some of these playables let the player nearly finish and stop, which is the oldest trick in the format and still the most effective.
If your puzzle genuinely needs a rule explained, the format to test is video rather than a playable. Mobile game ads covers how studios split the two.

Questions
Which puzzle games suit a playable ad?
Ones whose goal is visible in the first frame: brick breakers, physics puzzles, hidden object scenes and sorting games. Puzzles that need a rule stated first do not compress.
What level should a puzzle playable use?
Neither level one nor a real mid-game level. Build a level that looks like skill and plays like a guarantee, then stop on the end card before it resolves.
Can I play real puzzle playable ads?
Yes. Every puzzle playable on this page is a real creative from the AppLovin network, kept as its original file so it runs here as it ran in an ad slot.
