Google Ads · Sprites fixes this

Broad match vs phrase match

Phrase match shows your ad on searches that include the meaning of your keyword. Broad match also shows it on searches that are only related, even without your words in them. Use phrase until you have solid conversion data and Smart Bidding, then test broad.

Why it happens

Broad match without Smart Bidding

  1. Broad match without Smart Bidding

Broad match leans on conversion-based bidding to pick good searches. On manual CPC or Maximize clicks it buys whatever is loosely related.

  2. Too little conversion data

Broad needs a steady flow of conversions to learn from. A campaign with a handful a month gives it nothing to learn on, so it spends on volume.

  3. Broad and phrase versions competing in one ad group

When the same keyword runs at both match types, Google prefers the identical one, but broad still picks up everything the phrase version would never touch.

  4. No negatives behind the broad keywords

Broad match needs a negative list from day one. Without it, jobs, free, DIY and competitor searches pile up in the search terms report.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Compare the two in the search terms report

Go to Campaigns, then Insights and reports, then Search terms. Add the Match type column and compare cost, conversions and CPA for broad versus phrase over 30 to 90 days.

  2. Keep broad only where Smart Bidding runs

Broad belongs in campaigns on Maximize conversions, Target CPA or Target ROAS with at least a few dozen conversions a month. Elsewhere, move to phrase.

  3. Add the phrase version, then pause the broad one

Google does not let you change a keyword's match type in place. Add the keyword again in quotes as phrase match, then pause the broad version so its history stays readable.

  4. Add negatives for what broad dragged in

Turn the irrelevant broad search terms into negatives at campaign level before you test broad again.

Sprites fixes this

Or let Sprites fix it

Sprites splits your search terms by match type, shows what broad is costing you, and moves the waste to phrase or exact.

What Sprites does

  • Reads every search term that triggered your Search campaigns, with cost and conversions per term.
  • Finds the zero-conversion spend across campaigns and keywords in one deduplicated total.
  • Adds the phrase or exact version of a keyword, pauses the broad one and adds negatives for the junk terms.
  • Shows each change on a card first. You approve every change before it goes live.

What it doesn't do

  • It does not change a keyword's match type in place. Google does not allow that, so it adds the new version and pauses the old.
  • Search terms come from Search campaigns. Performance Max terms are not part of this read.

Questions

Is phrase match better than broad match?

For most small and new accounts, yes. Phrase match keeps your ads near searches that mean what your keyword means. Broad match can win when Smart Bidding has enough conversions to steer it.

Does phrase match still include broad match modifier?

Yes. Google folded broad match modifier into phrase match in 2021, so phrase now covers what BMM used to, and word order can vary when the meaning holds.

Can I change a keyword from broad to phrase match?

Not in place. Add the keyword again in quotes as phrase match and pause the broad version. Pausing keeps its history in reports.

Why does Google keep recommending broad match?

Broad match gives Smart Bidding more searches to bid on. That helps when your conversion tracking is clean and your volume is high. It hurts when either is missing.

How long should I test broad match?

Give it at least two to four weeks and enough conversions for Smart Bidding to learn, then compare CPA and conversion volume against the phrase campaign.
