Why it happens
One loose keyword is doing the damage
One loose keyword is doing the damage
A single short broad keyword often triggers most of the junk. Check which keyword each bad term matched.
No negatives
Without campaign negatives every related search is fair game.
Ambiguous keywords
Words with two meanings, like "apple" or "java", pull in searches for the other meaning.
Loose targeting
No language criterion or a location setting of interest in rather than presence lets searches from outside your market in.
How to fix it, step by step
Find the bad terms and their keywords
Go to Campaigns, then Insights and reports, then Search terms. Add the Keyword column so you see which keyword triggered each irrelevant term.
Add negatives at campaign level
Tick the terms, choose Add as negative keyword, and pick the campaign rather than the ad group so the block covers everything.
Tighten the offending keyword
Add the phrase or exact version of the keyword that pulls junk and pause the broad one.
Check targeting
In campaign Settings, confirm languages and that Locations uses Presence: people in or regularly in your locations.

Sprites fixes this
Or let Sprites fix it
Sprites finds the irrelevant terms, the keywords pulling them in, and the targeting gaps behind them, then blocks them in one approved change.
What Sprites does
- Reads every search term with the keyword that triggered it.
- Reads campaign targeting and reports gaps like no language criterion or no negatives at all.
- Adds campaign or ad-group negatives and pauses or tightens the keywords that pull junk.
- You approve every change before it goes live.
What it doesn't do
- It does not change location or language settings from this flow.
- It does not add negatives to Performance Max campaigns.
Questions
Why do my Google Ads show for unrelated searches?
Broad and phrase match keywords match searches with related meaning, and close variants widen that further. Without negatives, Google serves on those searches.
How do I stop irrelevant search terms?
Add them as negative keywords at campaign level, tighten the keyword that triggered them, and check your language and location settings.
Will exact match stop irrelevant searches?
It reduces them a lot. Exact still matches close variants with the same meaning, so check its terms too.
How fast do negative keywords take effect?
Within hours. New searches matching the negative stop triggering your ads.
