Can you advertise on Perplexity right now?

No. There is no self-serve product, no auction, no ads dashboard, no public rate card and no “advertise with us” page. Perplexity said in October 2025 that it had stopped accepting new advertisers, and the Financial Times reported in February 2026 that the programme was being wound down.

What is confirmed, and what is only reported
Perplexity itself confirmed the launch on 12 November 2024 as an experiment, that it stopped accepting new advertisers by October 2025, and, through its communications chief, that ads were under 0.01% of revenue. The wind-down is reported, not announced: the Financial Times broke it in February 2026 and other outlets are relaying that report. Perplexity has published no post retiring the programme, and its 2024 launch post is still live, unedited, in the present tense.

One page trips up almost every other write-up on this subject: perplexity.ai/enterprise/use-cases/advertising, which is titled “Perplexity for advertising” and is not a way to buy placements. It is Perplexity’s AI subscription sold to ad agencies as a research tool, pitched on “Validate your strategy with deep research” and “Get pitch-ready ideas in seconds”, with “Contact us” running into Enterprise sales. If a competitor page tells you Perplexity has an advertising page, this is what they found.

One caution about method, too. Perplexity’s own site blocks automated requests, so a page returning an error to a script proves nothing about whether it exists. Everything on this page was checked against the archived record rather than against a failed fetch.

The full timeline, with sources

Perplexity pitched advertisers in August 2024, launched in November 2024, closed to new advertisers in October 2025, and was reported to be winding down in February 2026.

  1. August 2024
Perplexity’s sales deck reaches advertisers and Adweek publishes it. Digiday reports CPMs “north of $50”, attributed to a source inside the company rather than to the deck.
  2. 12 November 2024
Ads launch. Perplexity’s own post calls it an experiment, US only, in two formats, and names Indeed, Whole Foods Market, Universal McCann and PMG as first partners. TechCrunch and others cover it the same day.
  3. 18 November 2024
Six days later, Perplexity launches its Merchant Program and draws a hard line: the shopping cards “aren’t sponsored”, and the programme is “distinct from and unrelated to Perplexity’s new sponsored questions ad products”.
  4. May 2025
Half a year in, Digiday reports that buyers want scale and that no return-on-investment data has been shared.
  5. September 2025
Perplexity’s ads chief departs. Its communications chief tells Digiday, on the record, that ads are under 0.01% of revenue and that fewer than 0.5% of advertisers who asked to run have been allowed to.
  6. October 2025
At Advertising Week New York, Perplexity says it has stopped accepting new advertisers, and that ads will not go into its Comet browser, “at least for now”.
  7. February 2026
The Financial Times reports the programme is being wound down, citing trust in the answer. Search Engine Land and Campaign relay it. Perplexity itself publishes nothing.

What a Perplexity ad actually looked like

Two formats shipped: a sponsored follow-up question at the top of the “Related” rail under an answer, and paid media beside the answer. The sponsored row carried the word “SPONSORED” in small grey capitals and nothing else: no logo, no colour, no border.

Perplexity described the units in its launch post as “sponsored follow-up questions” and “paid media positioned to the side of an answer”, and committed that “advertising material will be clearly noted as ‘sponsored’” and that answers to sponsored questions “will still be generated by our technology, and not written or edited by the brands sponsoring the questions”.

The example Perplexity published shows the Related list under an answer with six rows. The first row reads “How can I use Indeed to enhance my job search?” with SPONSORED in small grey letter-spaced capitals beneath it. It is set in the same type as the five organic follow-ups under it, with the same affordance on the right. A reader scanning the rail would have to be looking for the label to find it.

The pitched unit and the shipped unit were not the same
Perplexity’s August 2024 sales deck mocked up richer placements: an “Answer page takeover” with 100% share of voice, a sponsored row with a circular brand logo on a shaded background, and a video card pinned beside the answer with an “AD” chip. What actually shipped three months later was the plain row with grey capitals and no logo. Pages that describe the deck’s formats as the product are describing something that was never sold.

Which brands actually advertised on Perplexity

Perplexity named four first partners: Indeed, Whole Foods Market, Universal McCann and PMG. Adweek later reported TurboTax. That is the whole verifiable roster.

  • Indeed, named by Perplexity, and the brand in its own example screenshot.
  • Whole Foods Market, named by Perplexity.
  • Universal McCann, agency, IPG Mediabrands. Named by Perplexity.
  • PMG, independent agency. Named by Perplexity.
  • TurboTax, not in the launch four; reported later by Adweek, running a sponsored question about investment income.
Nike and Marriott Bonvoy were never advertisers
Both appear as mock brands inside Perplexity’s sales deck, which is why they turn up on so many pages as customers. They are illustrations. Perplexity said “and others” after its list of four and never enumerated them, so any longer roster you see is someone filling in the blank.

Why Perplexity stopped

It never reached meaningful scale. Perplexity’s own communications chief said ads were under 0.01% of revenue and that fewer than one in two hundred advertisers who asked to run were let in.

Those two numbers, given on the record to Digiday in September 2025, explain the outcome better than anything written since. A programme admitting under 0.5% of the advertisers who want in is not supply-constrained by accident; it is being rationed to protect something. Perplexity’s stated reason, in the reporting of the wind-down, was trust in the answer.

There is a structural reading too, and Perplexity gave it themselves at launch: they said they built ads the way they did specifically to “avoid duplicating the SEO industry where people are implementing arbitrary tactics to improve their rankings.” An ad unit designed to be indistinguishable from the organic rail, answering in the platform’s own voice, with the brand unable to write the answer, is a hard thing to sell at scale to advertisers who want control and measurement.

What Perplexity ads cost

One number was ever published: CPMs “north of $50”, reported by Digiday in August 2024 from a source inside the company. There was no public rate card and no published minimum spend.

That $50-plus CPM is worth holding at arm’s length. It is an anonymous source describing a pitch deck, it was never on a Perplexity page, and it described a product that had not launched yet. Perplexity’s deck offered “exclusive category ownership through end of year” to charter partners with no price attached.

The “$500,000 minimum” is not sourced
It is repeated widely and traces to no named publication. Adweek, Digiday and CNBC covered the pitch in detail and none of them published a minimum spend. If you need a number for a plan, the honest answer is that there is not one.

What an advertiser can do on Perplexity today

Nothing paid. You can join the free Merchant Program, earn citations organically, or buy Perplexity Enterprise as an agency research tool. For paid placement inside an answer engine, ChatGPT is the live option.

  • The Merchant Program, free, no commission, a product feed and one-click checkout. Perplexity was explicit that this is not advertising: the cards “aren’t sponsored”, and the programme is “distinct from and unrelated to” the ad products. Perplexity’s announcement.
  • Earn citations, the unpaid route, and the one Perplexity designed its ad product around not replacing.
  • Perplexity Enterprise, sold to agencies as a research tool. Useful, and not a media buy.
  • ChatGPT ads, the answer-engine ad product you can actually run today.

What answer-engine ads look like now

Perplexity’s own creative is gone from the product, so the closest live reference is ChatGPT, where sponsored units are running and documented. These are ChatGPT ads, not Perplexity ads, the two platforms never shared a format.

The shapes are worth comparing rather than conflating. Perplexity’s unit was a question: a row in the follow-up rail that, when tapped, produced a Perplexity-written answer the advertiser could not edit. ChatGPT’s units are closer to conventional ad products: sponsored cards and product carousels inside or beneath a reply, with the brand’s own copy and imagery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I advertise on Perplexity in 2026?

No. Perplexity stopped accepting new advertisers in October 2025, and the Financial Times reported in February 2026 that the programme was being wound down. There is no self-serve product, no rate card and no public sign-up.

Did Perplexity officially end its advertising programme?

Not in its own words. Perplexity has published no post retiring the programme, and its November 2024 launch post is still live and unedited. The wind-down was reported by the Financial Times in February 2026 and relayed by other outlets.

What were Perplexity ads called?

Sponsored follow-up questions, and paid media positioned to the side of an answer. The sponsored question appeared at the top of the “Related” rail beneath an answer, labelled SPONSORED in small grey capitals.

Who advertised on Perplexity?

Perplexity named Indeed, Whole Foods Market, Universal McCann and PMG as first partners, and said “and others” without naming them. Adweek later reported TurboTax. Nike and Marriott Bonvoy appear only as mock brands in Perplexity’s sales deck and were never advertisers.

How much did Perplexity ads cost?

The only published figure is a CPM “north of $50”, reported by Digiday in August 2024 from an unnamed source inside the company, describing the pitch deck rather than the shipped product. No minimum spend was ever published by a named source.

Why did Perplexity stop running ads?

It never reached scale. Perplexity’s communications chief said on the record in September 2025 that ads were under 0.01% of revenue and that fewer than 0.5% of advertisers who asked had been allowed to run. Reporting on the wind-down cited trust in the answer.

Is “Perplexity for advertising” a way to buy ads?
