What changed
- First published. Covers the June 22, 2026 rename to AppLovin Ads, the $10 a day minimum and the four campaign goals.
What is AppLovin Axon?
Axon is AppLovin’s AI recommendation and bidding engine. It predicts, for every ad impression, how likely each advertiser is to get the outcome they asked for, and it bids, targets and picks the creative on that prediction.
The name has moved twice. Axon started as the model: AXON 2.0 rolled out in the second quarter of 2023, and AppLovin credited it for that quarter, when software platform revenue hit $406 million, up 14 percent on the quarter. On October 1, 2025 the whole advertiser business took the name, with its own domain, axon.ai, and a self-serve tool called Axon Ads Manager. Nine months later the business went back under the AppLovin name and Axon went back to being the engine.
So “axon applovin” today means one of two things. If you mean the model, this page is about it. If you mean the place to buy ads, that is AppLovin Ads, and the AppLovin ads it serves are in our library, playable in the browser.
How does Axon decide who sees an ad?
You give Axon a goal and a budget. It predicts the outcome of each impression, bids on the ones worth buying, and chooses the creative. There is no manual audience targeting.
- You set the goal. A return on ad spend target, a cost per purchase, a cost per lead, or an in-app event.
- Axon scores every impression. For each ad slot that opens inside an app, it predicts how likely each campaign is to produce that outcome.
- Axon bids. The prediction becomes a price, and the bid goes into the auction for that slot.
- Axon picks the creative. From the video, playable and end-card assets you uploaded, it serves the one it expects to convert.
- Results train the next bid. Purchases and events reported back by your pixel or SDK feed the model.
What you do not get is a targeting panel. There are no interest audiences, no lookalikes and no placement list to curate. AppLovin describes its targeting as built on contextual signals such as IP range rather than persistent device IDs, and says it does not create device fingerprints, a point it made publicly after short sellers alleged otherwise in 2025 (Marketing Brew has the back and forth). The practical upshot is that your levers are the goal, the bid, the budget and the creative. Nothing else.
Axon timeline: from model to platform and back
AXON 2.0 shipped in Q2 2023. E-commerce was piloted in 2024. Axon Ads Manager opened by referral on October 1, 2025, and on June 22, 2026 the platform became AppLovin Ads, open to any business.
- AXON 2.0 rolls out. AppLovin reports software platform revenue of $406 million at a 67 percent adjusted EBITDA margin and credits the model.
- E-commerce pilot. Web and DTC advertisers start buying in-app inventory through Axon by invitation. Management calls it the fastest-growing area but not yet material to revenue.
- The advertiser business is rebranded Axon, at axon.ai. Axon Ads Manager launches as self-serve, but only with a referral.
- On the Q1 call, CEO Adam Foroughi says any advertiser will be able to sign up from June, and puts average annualized revenue per new customer at “well over $70,000” (PPC Land).
- General availability. The platform is renamed AppLovin Ads, referral codes are gone, and any business can sign up. Axon stays as the name of the AI system.
- Ads Manager adds end-card building from PNG, JPG or GIF with an automatic call to action, and a media library for bulk upload (Common Thread Collective).
What can you optimize for, and what do you need to start?
Four goals: return on ad spend, cost per purchase, cost per lead and in-app events. The minimum budget is $10 a day, and web advertisers install the Axon Pixel with JavaScript, Google Tag Manager or the Shopify app.
| Goal | What Axon optimizes | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| ROAS | Revenue returned per dollar, against your target | Stores with a clean purchase value in the pixel |
| CPP | Cost per purchase | Stores that want volume at a fixed cost |
| CPL | Cost per lead, the newest goal | Services and lead generation |
| IAE | A chosen in-app event | Apps and games |
- Budget. AppLovin says you can launch with as little as $10 a day. Full cost math is in how much AppLovin ads cost.
- Pixel. The Axon Pixel installs as native JavaScript, through Google Tag Manager, or through the free AppLovin app for Shopify, which also syncs the product catalog. It still carries the Axon name, because the pixel feeds the model.
- Business types. Physical products, digital products, subscriptions and services, on web or in an app.
- Creative. Full-screen 9:16 video up to 60 seconds, plus an end card. Real playables and video from the network are in the AppLovin ads library.
- Countries. AppLovin publishes no country list for AppLovin Ads. Check availability for your region at sign-up.
Reporting and automation are available by API: a reporting endpoint and a campaign management API that still runs on the axon.ai host. The details are in the AppLovin API guide.
What do Axon e-commerce ads look like?
Mostly a product in a full-screen frame, shown between levels of a mobile game, with a tap straight to the store. Mattresses, phone mounts, pergolas, supplements and medical devices all run there.
AppLovin names Gymshark, Fashion Nova, Prose, Wayfair, Ashley, HelloFresh, Bombas and Quince as advertisers on its consumer-brands page, and says ads run in games such as Subway Surfers, Candy Crush, Sudoku, Solitaire and Words With Friends. The ads above are what that looks like from the player’s side: a clean product shot, a price or an offer, and very little copy. For who else buys the network, see what AppLovin does and who uses it.
What can you see about another brand’s Axon campaigns?
The creative, and sometimes how many apps carried it. Spend, ROAS, installs, bids and targeting are private to the advertiser and AppLovin.
| Signal | Visible | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The creative | Yes | It is served to real players and can be read in the AppLovin ads library. |
| The advertiser | Sometimes | Named when the brand is printed on the creative. The network attaches no advertiser id. |
| Reach across apps | Partial | A count of apps that carried a creative. Never impressions. |
| Spend, ROAS, installs | No | Private to the advertiser and AppLovin. |
| Targeting | No | There is no audience to see. Axon decides per impression. |
Any tool that quotes you a competitor’s AppLovin spend is modelling it. The same competitor’s Meta, Google and LinkedIn ads are public record, because those platforms publish ad libraries. Sprites reads those three libraries, shows you which of a competitor’s ads are carrying the account, and runs your own Google, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok and Reddit campaigns in answer.
Is Axon worth testing in 2026?
For a store with a working pixel, a clear purchase value and full-screen video creative, yes: the entry cost is $10 a day and there is no referral gate. For a brand without video, fix the creative first.
Axon rewards two things you bring: clean conversion data and creative built for a full-screen, sound-on, in-game moment. It punishes the absence of either, because there is no audience setting to compensate. On the Q2 2026 call, Foroughi put it plainly: “Creative is the biggest hurdle.”
What advertisers report so far, the criticism the platform has faced and where it landed are in the AppLovin ads review. If you are comparing ML-driven app networks, AppLovin vs Moloco covers the structural difference.

Frequently asked questions
Is Axon the same as AppLovin?
No. AppLovin is the company. Axon is its AI recommendation and bidding engine. From October 2025 to June 2026 the advertiser platform was also branded Axon, but since June 22, 2026 the platform is called AppLovin Ads and Axon refers to the model only.
Is Axon Ads Manager still a thing?
Not by that name. Axon Ads Manager was renamed AppLovin Ads on June 22, 2026, and the dashboard moved to ads.applovin.com. Some pieces still carry the Axon name, including the Axon Pixel and the campaign management API host.
Do I still need a referral code for AppLovin Ads?
No. AppLovin dropped the referral requirement on June 22, 2026. Any business can sign up.
What is the minimum budget on AppLovin Ads?
AppLovin says you can launch with a budget as low as $10 a day.
Can I choose my audience on Axon?
No. There is no manual audience targeting. You set a goal such as ROAS or cost per purchase, and Axon decides which impressions to buy.
Where do AppLovin ads show?
Inside mobile apps, mostly games. AppLovin names Subway Surfers, Candy Crush, Sudoku, Solitaire and Words With Friends among them. The ads are usually full-screen video, playables or end cards shown between levels.
Does Axon work with Shopify?
Yes. The free AppLovin app on the Shopify App Store installs the Axon Pixel and syncs the product catalog.
Can I see a competitor’s Axon spend?
No. Spend, ROAS, installs, bids and targeting are private to the advertiser and AppLovin. The creative is the observable part, and the AppLovin ads library shows it.
Axon runs your AppLovin ads. Sprites runs the rest.
Most brands buying AppLovin also buy Meta and Google. Sprites reads your competitors’ ads on those platforms and runs your Google, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok and Reddit campaigns, with your approval on every change.
