Why it happens
Someone changed the account
Someone changed the account
A lower target CPA, a switched bid strategy, a cut budget, paused keywords or a new negative list. Change history shows it.
Ads were disapproved
A policy review can disapprove a whole set of ads overnight. See Google Ads disapproved.
The bid strategy is recalibrating
A significant change sends Smart Bidding back into learning and delivery wobbles. See bid strategy learning.
Competitors raised their bids
With no change on your side, a jump in Search lost IS (rank) means the auction got more expensive.
Demand dropped
Seasonality or a news cycle. Impression share holds steady while impressions fall.
How to fix it, step by step
Pin the date
Set the date range to the last 30 days and view impressions by day in the Campaigns overview. Find the first bad day.
Read Change history
Open Change history and filter to the few days before the drop. Revert anything that lines up.
Check ad and keyword status
Filter Ads for Disapproved and keywords for Low search volume or Rarely shown.
Split the loss
Compare Search impr. share, lost IS (budget) and lost IS (rank) before and after the date. Rank loss is bids and quality; budget loss is budget.
Check demand
If impression share held, the market shrank. Compare the same period last year before changing anything.

Sprites fixes this
Or let Sprites fix it
Sprites finds the day impressions fell, lines it up with what changed, and reverses the change you approve.
What Sprites does
- Locates the largest day-over-day drop and pulls that day’s detail.
- Lines the drop up with every account change made just before it, from the last 30 days of history.
- Reads ad approval and policy findings for disapprovals that landed on the same day.
- Puts back the old budget, bid target or status in one approved change.
What it doesn't do
- It cannot see competitors’ bids, only the impression share you lose to them.
- Change history only goes back 30 days.
Questions
Why did my Google Ads impressions drop suddenly?
Usually a change in the account on or just before the drop: bids, targets, budget, status or negatives. If nothing changed, competitors or demand did.
Did a Google update cause my impressions to drop?
Possible but less likely than a change in your account. Rule out your own changes and disapprovals first.
Why did impressions drop but clicks stay the same?
You likely lost low-value placements, like search partners or low positions, while keeping the clicks that matter. Check by network and by top versus other position.
How far back does Google Ads change history go?
Longer in the interface than through the API, which returns the last 30 days. For anything older, use the Change history page in the account.
